How to Rip a DVD to an Xbox 36011/1/2011

How to Rip a DVD to an Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 is more than a video game console; it can play back DVDs, stream video over the Internet and let you communicate with friends. The Xbox 360 cannot, by itself, convert your movies from DVD and save them to its internal hard drive, but it is possible with the help of your PC. Using DVD conversion software you can rip the DVD to a digital video file and use a portable flash drive to transfer it to the Xbox for playback.  DVd drive

Instructions

1
Download and install a DVD conversion application. Handbrake is a popular, free application; see "Resources" for additional applications.

2
Insert the DVD into your computer's DVD-ROM and open the conversion application.

3
Select the inserted DVD as the "Source." Adjust the necessary settings (file size, format, quality) and select a folder in which to save the output. For the best quality and compatibility, use the MPEG-4 format, though the Xbox can read DivX-encoded videos as well. Click "Start" to begin converting the DVD to a digital video file. It is important to refer to the application's user guide for any specific settings or instructions. It may take a few hours to completely rip the DVD.  Dreambox dm800

4
Insert a USB flash drive into your computer's USB port. Drag the resulting digital video file from their folder to the USB drive. Disconnect the drive once the transfer is complete.

5
Plug the USB flash drive into the USB port on the back of the Xbox 360 and power on the system.

6
Navigate to "Video Library," then select "Portable Device." Select the inserted USB drive, navigate to the video file and select it to begin transferring and playing the DVD movie on your Xbox 360.

How to Play a PAL DVD on a PC11/1/2011

How to Play a PAL DVD on a PC

Stand-alone DVD players are only able to play either NTSC or PAL, and the region code of the DVD player stays the same. In the United States and Japan, the DVD format is NTSC, while in Europe and a majority of the rest of the world, the video format is PAL (there is a slight difference in the video frame rate). It is possible to play a PAL DVD drive  DVD with a computer, but you are able to switch between NTSC and PAL only a few times

How to Update a CD Driver in a Laptop11/1/2011

How to Update a CD Driver in a Laptop

Sometimes it is necessary to update CD or DVD drivers in a laptop. Computers can malfunction or fail to recognize a CD drive or device due to non-updated drivers. Although most computers have built-in drivers that will automatically install, sometimes you must manually install the driver update. Rather than install an update provided by the laptop's operating system, it is recommended to use a driver offered by the manufacturer of the laptop (e.g., Dell, HP or Toshiba).

Instructions

1
Determine the make and model of the laptop. This is located in the manual or on the bottom of the laptop.

2
Locate the CD drive on the computer. Do this by going to "Start" > "Control Panel" > "Performance and Maintenance" > "System." Select the tab labeled "Hardware" and choose "Device Manager." From the list, select "DVD/CD-ROM Drives." Note the drive that needs to be updated.

3
Visit the laptop manufacturer's website. In the Customer Support or Customer Service area, find the driver downloads. Some websites will allow a search for the name of the drive that needs to be updated. Others may have drop down boxes that require you to enter the make and model of the laptop, then the driver type.  Dreambox dm8000

4
Click on the correct driver package, then choose "Save to File" and specify to which folder the downloaded driver should be saved.

5
Double-click on the driver icon to uncompress the files. Certain files, such as .zip files, may need a program such as WinZip or PKZip Reader to unzip the driver.

6
Go back to the Device Manager and highlight the CD drive that needs to be updated. Click "Properties." Choose the tab labeled "Driver," then click on the "Update Driver" button. Follow the directions in the dialog box.  Dreambox dm800

7
Choose "Display a List of Drivers" from the dialog box. Select "Have Disk" and choose the .inf file from the unzipped driver download. Hit "OK" to install. Restart the computer

How to Install a DVD Player in an HP Computer10/28/2011

How to Install a DVD Player in an HP Computer

Whether you are installing your first DVD drive or just filling a stray expansion slot, there are plenty of reasons to install a DVD-playing drive for your HP computer. Although installing a new drive in a computer sounds like a tall order, as long as you have the right equipment and take appropriate safety precautions, the installation process is fairly easy
Instructions

1
Power off the computer and unplug all cables and power cord. Place the computer on a flat, non-static surface, such as a table, with the drive ports facing upwards. Make sure the table is on an uncarpeted floor.

2
Open the computer shell by removing the side panel screws. Only remove the screws connecting the panel, as other screws keep power components in place and should not be tampered with.

3
Remove the screws on the front of the computer holding the faceplate in place. Remove the plastic covering the empty drive bay by prying it loose with the flat end of the screwdriver.

4
Pull out the IDE cable (the long, flat cord at the bottom of the drive bay) and attach it to the new drive's IDE port. If this is the only DVD drive for the computer, use the "Master" end of the IDE cable. If there is another drive, use whichever part of the IDE cable is not being used for the other drive.  dreambox dm800

5
Pull out the red and yellow cords and connect them to the audio and power ports on the drive. Make sure not to tug on these cords so you don't accidentally dislodge the cables from other ports.

6
Slide the drive into the drive bay and secure it using screws (if applicable). Once the drive is installed, replace the faceplate and side panels. Replace all cables and power cord. Start the computer. The drive should automatically be detected, and drivers will install within a few moments. If you are having trouble with the drivers, see the drive's owner's manual for support information.

Tips & Warnings
It is very important to install your DVD-playing drive in a static free environment to reduce the risk of electronic damage. The easiest way to ensure there is no electro-static charge is to use a static-canceling mat and wear an anti-static wristband connected to a ground source.

How to Replace DVD RW on Acer Aspire 510010/28/2011

How to Replace DVD RW on Acer Aspire 5100

Sometimes things just break. This axiom holds just as true for computer parts as it does for any other type of matter in the known universe. When your Acer Aspire 5100's DVD drive eventually succumbs to this universal law, you're doubtless going to want to replace it with one that is not broken. Fortunately, the 5100's simple, modular design means that this task can be accomplished with a minimum of fuss.

Instructions

1
Unplug your Acer Aspire 5100 and turn it over so that the bottom of the laptop is facing toward the ceiling.

2
Locate the single screw immediately to the right and center of the DVD drive. Remove this screw with your Phillips-head screwdriver.

3
Remove the four screws securing down the large panel immediately to the right of the screw you just removed, then pop this panel off of the bottom of your 5100 and set it aside.

4
Slide your flat-head screwdriver into the small hole immediately above the screw you removed in the first step and apply gentle pressure against the back of the DVD drive until it comes loose.

5
Slide the DVD drive out the side of the Acer Aspire 5100.

6
Slide your replacement drive into the now-empty DVD drive slot and push it gently inwards until you feel it slide into the connections inside the laptop.

7
Replace the large panel and secure it down using the screws you removed in Step 2.

8
Re-install the screw you removed in Step 1 using your Phillips-head screwdriver. Your new DVD drive is now ready for use

How to Remove HP Pavilion DV 6000 Disk Drive10/28/2011

How to Remove HP Pavilion DV 6000 Disk Drive

The HP Pavilion DV6000 laptop computer uses the modern Serial ATA (SATA) standard for its internal hard drive. Its original built-to-order configurations included hard drives in sizes ranging from 40 to 200 GB. Today, SATA hard drives for laptops far exceed the size available when HP marketed the DV6000. However, the hard drive is a removable part. If you have a larger SATA notebook hard drive that you would like to install in your HP Pavilion DV6000, you can remove the existing hard drive and upgrade it with a newer model.

Instructions

1
Shut the HP Pavilion DV6000 down. Move it to a sturdy flat surface with the closed screen facing down and remove the battery pack before beginning.DVD drive

2
Unscrew the two Phillips-head screws from the rectangular vented cover in the corner of the Pavilion DV6000. The hard drive cover has a rubber foot on the corner opposite the vent. The screws cannot be removed from the hard drive cover; once you have unscrewed them as far as possible, remove the cover and set it aside.

3
Use the black plastic strip on the top of the hard drive carrier to lift the side of the carrier above the edge of the Pavilion DV6000. After lifting the hard drive slightly, pull it horizontally to disengage the electronic connectors on the edge of the hard drive from the connector inside the Pavilion DV6000 hard drive bay. Problems With a Dual Layer DVD Burner10/26/2011

Problems With a Dual Layer DVD Burner

Dual layer DVD burners will record a maximum of 4 hours of video to a disc. The disc needs to be large, up to 8.5 GB of space. The dual layer refers to two different recordable layers on the disc. This technology has been used for many years as the DVDs found in stores are dual layer. Most DVD burners today have the ability to burn dual layer discs.

Speed
Dual layer discs take longer to burn because there is more information that is transfered to the disc. Also, the writing speed of dual layer burners are slow topping out at only 2.4x. Single layer burners burn very fast because they have burning speeds of 16x or 24x.

Compatibility
Sometimes the dual layer burned discs is not compatible with all players or computers. Older DVD players or PCs do not support dual layer technology. The disc will not be recognized. Sometimes upgrades are available so that older burners and players can recognize the dual layer discs, but these upgrades are not available for all manufacturers.

Layer Switch
Sometimes when burning the burner will have difficulty switching between the layers to record on the second DVD layer. When this occurs and the DVD is played back, the movie will freeze when the layer switch occurs. Different burning software will deal with this problem in different ways. Some software does not have a problem with the layer break such as RecordNow DX, RealMagig Hollywood Plus and WinDVD.

Disc Type
Some burners will only support one type of dual layer DVD disc. The burner may not burn on DVD-R discs but will burn on DVD+R dual layer discs. If the burner is showing errors with the disc type, then try the other type of disc. The newest dual layer burners will not have a problem burning on any type of DVD disc.

How to Run an ISO File From a DVD10/24/2011

How to Run an ISO File From a DVD

An ISO file is essentially a full virtual copy of a CD that has been copied to some type of storage media--in this case, a DVD. These virtual copies are useless to a computer user, however, until they are burned back onto a CD, or until they are accessed--the technical term is "mounted"--by a program that functions as a virtual CD drive. Fortunately, these programs are easy to find and most of them are free to download.  dreambox dm800

Instructions

1
Download and install the virtual CD drive program of your choice, such as MagicISO or Daemon Tools (see the download links in the "Resources" section). Follow the onscreen instructions, then restart your computer when you are prompted.

2
Insert the DVD containing the ISO image into your computer's DVD drive.

3
Look at the bottom right of your screen and locate the icon representing your virtual drive manager. For Daemon Tools, this will be a small lightning bolt icon. For MagicISO, it will be a hand holding a CD.

4
Move your mouse over the "virtual devices" pop-out menu, then over the "device 0" option. Click "Mount Image."

5
Navigate to the DVD drive containing the DVD with the ISO on it in the "open" window that appears. Select the ISO file, then click "Open."

6
Open "My Computer." You will see an extra CD drive located in the "devices with removable storage" section. This is the virtual drive created by the program you downloaded and installed in Step 1. Double-click this drive to access the ISO file, as it will now behave just like a physical CD that has been inserted in a physical drive.

How to Clean LightScribe Discs10/24/2011

How to Clean LightScribe Discs

LightScribe discs are laser-etched DVDs and CDs with customized labels that don't peel or smudge. With a special drive and software, you can burn a photo, text or design onto a disc to create a unique label. LightScribe uses a laser to etch images and text onto a CD or DVD that is coated with a special reactive dye. A LightScribe disc that has become dirty or smudged with fingerprints may not perform properly. The LightScribe website recommends using plain water to clean the discs   DVD drive

How to Burn DVD Movies on an Apple Computer10/24/2011

How to Burn DVD Movies on an Apple Computer

People use the term "DVD" to refer to both a physical disc and a disc formatted to play in a DVD player. As you may have discovered, a burned DVD disc containing video files will not usually play in a DVD player. A DVD movie plays in a DVD player because the files are organized as a DVD-Video. The DVD-Video standard uses specific types of video and audio compression that DVD players understand. Mac users have several options for burning DVD movies

Instructions   Dreambox dm800

1
Use the free, open-source application Burn for burning DVD movies on your Mac (see Resources). "Burn keeps it simple, but still offers a lot of advanced options," reports the Burn website. Burn can create a DVD from movie files in a variety of formats and allows you to create interactive menus for the DVD.

2
Burn DVD movies on your Apple computer using DVD Burner for Mac (see Resources). This shareware program supports popular video formats and allows you to burn DVD-Video discs. You have the option of creating menus using thumbnails of the video files, names of the video files or creating no menu on the DVD. DVD Burner is practical, with basic features.

3    Dreambox dm8000
Use Roxio Toast Titanium to burn DVD movies on your Mac (see Resources). Toast Titanium comes in a standard edition and a pro edition. This DVD burning application offers a wide range of features beyond just disc burning, such as file compression, video conversion and Blu-ray burning. Toast Titanium Pro also includes soundtrack creation, audio noise reduction, high def slide shows and visual photo editing.
