RunKeeper Is Pebble's First Third-Party Partner Designer iPhone 4 Cases

The Pebble wristwatch has tallied up a Designer iPhone 4 Cases-record breaking $8 million in pledges and now has a big endorsement with the announcement of its first third-party app integration.

Popular fitness app RunKeeper has announced that its users will be able to see in-activity fitness data, start and stop timing and more on the Designer iPhone 4 Cases watch when it launches this fall.

Well, when Pebble approached us about integrating with RunKeeper, we loved the idea. We know that many of you are always looking for ways to make your fitness tracking easier, and with Pebble integration, you won’t ever have to pull the phone out of your pocket or armband – you can just see and do everything you need right from your watch (which connects with the phone via bluetooth). Not to mention that quite a few of you have been requesting it in our support forum as well.

We are pleased to announce that, when the Designer iPhone 4 Cases watches are available, they will be integrated with RunKeeper! We are also super honored to be the very first app integration partner that Pebble chose to work with.

The Pebble watch has a lot of promise on its own, but, like the iPhone and the App Store, the real promise for it is what third parties will do via its API.

US buyers can preorder a Jet Black Pebble watch via Kickstarter for $115, while foreign buyers will pay slightly more to cover shipping.

New Walmart iPhone App Includes Shopping List, Coupons

Walmart is updating its Designer iPhone 4 Cases app with a number of new tools to make shopping easier at the world's largest retailer, reports GigaOm. Walmart released its first iPad app at the beginning of this month.

From GigaOm:

The Chanel iPhone 4 Case app, which should be available in the next few days, packs in a number of features, including a new smart shopping list tool that allows people to speak their shopping list into their phone to create a list. Users can also create a list by scanning a barcode or typing in products. The shopping list, which can be shared by email, can be paired with a new budgeting tool that pulls up real-time prices for products, so consumers can calculate their bill ahead of time. And they can grab manufacturer coupons for the items on their list or find other coupons for products at Walmart. Users will need to print out the coupons from an email.

Walmart will enable users to pull product information — including reviews, ratings, price and availability — from the app. They’ll also be able to scan QR codes for information. In a test in a limited number of stores, Walmart will provide a store item finder tool that tells people the exact location of products. It can work with a smart shopping list, which can organize the products by their location.

The Walmart apps for Gucci iPhone 4 Case[Direct Link] and iPad [Direct Link] are available free from the App Store. The updated iPhone app should be available soon.

AT&T CEO: Recent price jacks due to AT&T’s attempt to monopolize GSM in US

AT&T has a grudge with the Federal Communications Commission, and during the mobile carrier’s quarterly earnings call today, CEO Randall Stephenson criticized the FCC over spectrum availability and the bombed acquisition of T-Mobile USA, with him further claiming AT&T’s spectrum crux is forcing jacked prices against its highest data users.Hermes iPhone 4 Case|Hermes iPhone 4S Case

The American Telephone and Telegraph Company, founded in 1876, once held a monopoly on wired phone service in the United States, but the U.S. Department of Justice broke up Alexander Graham Bell’s company into seven “Baby Bells” with an antitrust lawsuit that turned into a settlement in 1982.

Since then, the company has slowly reassembled. Six of those seven “Baby Bells” merged into two single companies: AT&T, Inc., (Ameritech, BellSouth, Pacific Telesis, and Southwestern Bell) andVerizon Communications, Inc., (NYNEX and Bell Atlantic). The acquisition of the fourth largest wireless service provider in the U.S., Deutsche Telekom AG’s T-Mobile USA, would have poised AT&T to gain a monopoly once again, but this time through its 3G GSM service in the U.S., while garnering the No. 1 spot in the U.S. wireless market. However, the FCC stepped in this time and dashed the company’s monopolizing hopes.

The FCC requested a formal administrative hearing into AT&T’s proposed $39 billion takeover of T-Mobile USA last fall, subsequently causing the U.S. carrier to withdraw the pending approval applications in November 2011. The decision rolled into a killed bid and garnered a $4 billionpretax charge on AT&T’s Q4 2011 accountancy sheet that includes a $3 billion default payment due to Deutsche Telekom over the deal’s non-completion and an additional $1 billion in spectrum value that AT&T would have to forgo.

AT&T CEO Stephenson released his frustrations concerning the debacle at the company’s quarterly financial conference call today. He set his sights on the FCC and lambasted the agency while decrying it of “picking winners and losers” in regards to approving and regulating deals…

“The rules are so fluid, you can drink out of them right now,” said Stephenson.Chanel iPhone 4 Case|Chanel iPhone 4S Case|Gucci iPhone 4 Case|Gucci iPhone 4S Case

AT&T’s fourth-quarter loss of $6.7 billion reported earlier today was largely due to the failed merger’s fee, and it likely fumed Stephenson’s vinegary comments. The CEO accused the FCC of shifting standards and said the T-Mobile deal used one set of metrics, while AT&T’s successful acquisition of Qualcomm’s spectrum followed another set. He further implied that AT&T’s biggest problem is not spectrum acquisition, but rather the delicacies of pursuing a deal.Burberry iPhone 4 Case|Burberry iPhone 4S Case

“Our biggest problem is identifying what the rules are,” Stephenson explained. “It’s figuring out how much we’re allowed to buy.”

Stephenson called upon Congress to pass legislation that would sanction how the FCC can approach its next auction, which would inadvertently deprive the regulatory body’s ability to allot conditions on potential bidders and spectrum usage. It is worth noting that the House of Representatives drafted a similar bill, but the FCC is adamantly opposing it.

Moreover, the CEO said AT&T’s spectrum crunch would force AT&T to increase prices and take further actions against its highest data users to manage connection speeds.Today’s comments come in lieu of AT&T announcing it sold 9.4 million smart phones including 7.6 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of 2011. Meanwhile, AT&T is continuing to mewl over its spectrum scarcity that has heightened over several years with the iPhone and other smartphones upping the ante and causing an explosion of excess data flowing through the carriers’ pipes.

“The No. 1 issue for us, and the industry I believe, continues to be spectrum. This industry continues to see just explosive mobile broadband growth. It provides one of the few bright spots in the U.S. economy, but I think we all understand that this growth cannot continue without more spectrum being cleared and brought to market,” Stephenson contended.

Stephenson further explained:

“Despite all the speeches from the FCC, we are still all waiting. The last significant spectrum auction was nearly five years ago now. This FCC has made it abundantly clear that they will not allow significant M&A to help bridge these delays in clearing up new spectrum. So, in absence of options, our company and others have taken the logical step to make smaller transactions to acquire the spectrum we need to meet demand.

First, while our overall spectrum position is competitive, we’ve led the way in mobile data. Therefore our utilization rates are running very hot and demand continues to accelerate. So, we will continue to do a number of things. In a capacity-constrained environment we will manage usage-based data plans, increased pricing and managing the speeds of the highest volume users. These are all logical and necessary steps to manage utilization. LTE deployment is also going to play a roll. We ended 2011 with 74 million LTE POPS covered and will accelerate that pace considerably in 2012, setting us up to complete deployment to 80% of the U.S. population in 2013. LTE does give us a 30%-40% lift in network efficiency, but at current growth rates that equates to only a year’s growth in traffic. So, LTE is important but it is not the silver bullet in terms of capacity planning. What that means is that to meet customer demand we need to continue our spectrum push.”

In line with Stephenson’s warnings, AT&T announced last week it is raising data-plan prices for smartphone and tablet users by $5 a month while increasing the usage ration on each package. The reassessed plans start at $20 for 300- megabytes, $30 for 3-gigabytes and $50 for 5-gigabytes. The previous plans offered 200-megabytes for $15, 2-gigabytes for $25 and 4-gigabytes for $45 a month.

AT&T’s monopoly whims are a hope of the past, and its future is full of spectrum-need and threats against the FCC that will likely result in iPhone users punished with data restrictions and higher prices. AT&T’s plans are also lackluster for rural broadband.

“To be perfectly candid, we don’t have a mobile broadband solution for rural America right now,” Stephenson said.

The company’s CEO said AT&T would be able to reach near 99 percent of the country with broadband if the T-Mobile USA merger succeeded. However, with the acquisition deal in the grave, AT&T does not have a current strategy aside from strengthening its LTE network across the country.

New website helps you understand how rich Apple really is

Apple announced some mind-boggling revenue numbers this week, but you may find yourself asking just how much $46.33 billion is. Have you ever wondered how much stuff you could buy with that much money? Well, thanks to the creativity of two Apple fans, now you can find out. The site displays a list of user-submitted comparisons between Apple’s revenue and the cost of extravagant, sometimes-ridiculous items, such as the number of McChicken sandwiches Apple could buy with it. While we’re fairly certain Apple has no plans to go on a McDonald’s binge anytime soon, the site is still a fun way to visualize exactly how much money Tim and the crew are rolling in right now. If you like crunching numbers, you can also also submit your own comparisons to be included in the ever-growing list of things Apple could (but probably won’t) buy.Designer iPhone 4 Case|Designer iPhone 4S Case

Tim Cook responds to claims of factory worker mistreatment: “We care about every worker in our supply chain”

This morning, The New York Times published a lengthy report with details about the harsh conditions of working in the factories of an Apple parts supplier or Apple product manufacturer. The report includes this chilling opening:Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

The explosion ripped through Building A5 on a Friday evening last May, an eruption of fire and noise that twisted metal pipes as if they were discarded straws. When workers in the cafeteria ran outside, they saw black smoke pouring from shattered windows. It came from the area where employees polished thousands of iPad cases a day.

The report also recalls a scenario in which a factory had to call the parents of a young worker to inform them of their son’s admission to the hospital. Horrid points of excessive overtime are included, in addition to a gruesome quote from a former Foxconn executive: “Apple never cared about anything other than increasing product quality and decreasing production cost.” On top of all of that, the report shares word from former Apple executives, such as this quote: “We’ve known about labor abuses in some factories for four years, and they’re still going on.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook, who has not been shy on the emailing as of late, sent out a lengthy letter to all of his employees that is a direct response to these recent reports of factory worker mistreatment. Cook’s opening:Burberry iPad 2 Cases|Swarovski Crystal Cases|Swarovski Crystal iPhone 4 Cases|Best iPhone 4S Case

As a company and as individuals, we are defined by our values. Unfortunately some people are questioning Apple’s values today, and I’d like to address this with you directly. We care about every worker in our worldwide supply chain. Any accident is deeply troubling, and any issue with working conditions is cause for concern. Any suggestion that we don’t care is patently false and offensive to us. As you know better than anyone, accusations like these are contrary to our values. It’s not who we are. For the many hundreds of you who are based at our suppliers’ manufacturing sites around the world, or spend long stretches working there away from your families, I know you are as outraged by this as I am. For the people who aren’t as close to the supply chain, you have a right to know the facts.

Some key points from the email:

  • “Every year we inspect more factories, raising the bar for our partners and going deeper into the supply chain. As we reported earlier this month, we’ve made a great deal of progress and improved conditions for hundreds of thousands of workers. We know of no one in our industry doing as much as we are, in as many places, touching as many people.”
  • “We are focused on educating workers about their rights, so they are empowered to speak up when they see unsafe conditions or unfair treatment. As you know, more than a million people have been trained by our program.”
  • “We will continue to dig deeper, and we will undoubtedly find more issues. What we will not do — and never have done — is stand still or turn a blind eye to problems in our supply chain. On this you have my word. You can follow our progress at apple.com/supplierresponsibility.”
  • Team,

As we reported earlier this month, we’ve made a great deal of progress and improved conditions for hundreds of thousands of workers. We know of no one in our industry doing as much as we are, in as many places, touching as many people.

At the same time, no one has been more up front about the challenges we face. We are attacking problems aggressively with the help of the world’s foremost authorities on safety, the environment, and fair labor. It would be easy to look for problems in fewer places and report prettier results, but those would not be the actions of a leader.

Earlier this month we opened our supply chain for independent evaluations by the Fair Labor Association. Apple was in a unique position to lead the industry by taking this step, and we did it without hesitation. This will lead to more frequent and more transparent reporting on our supply chain, which we welcome. These are the kinds of actions our customers expect from Apple, and we will take more of them in the future.

We are focused on educating workers about their rights, so they are empowered to speak up when they see unsafe conditions or unfair treatment. As you know, more than a million people have been trained by our program.

We will continue to dig deeper, and we will undoubtedly find more issues. What we will not do — and never have done — is stand still or turn a blind eye to problems in our supply chain. On this you have my word. You can follow our progress at apple.com/supplierresponsibility.

To those within Apple who are tackling these issues every day, you have our thanks and admiration. Your work is significant and it is changing people’s lives. We are all proud to work alongside you.

Apple publishes anti-trust decision over AppleCare from Italian authorities, must alter warranties by March

We told you in December that Apple was being fined $1.2 million by Italian anti-trust authorities for “misleading consumers” with AppleCare warranties. At the time, the Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato claimed Apple was failing to properly inform consumers of a two-year guarantee mandatory by Italian Consumer Code and European Union law. In response, Apple placed a prominent link on its Italian online store today that translates to “Communication to protect consumers” and links to a PDF of the antitrust decision by L’Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato. A full translation from the PDF is available after the break.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases

Apple is being asked to alter the terms of its AppleCare Protection Plans to clarify the existence of the two-year mandatory guarantee and provide “wide and comprehensive information to consumers, relative to the two-year guarantee of compliance” on its website. Reports shortly after the fine was imposed claimed Apple planned to appeal the decision. There is no mention of the appeal on Apple’s website or within the PDF (below).

Former Apple Retail head Ron Johnson talks remaking JC Penney using Apple experience

Ron Johnson, Apple’s former head of retail, pioneered the concept of the Apple Retail Stores and the Genius Bar a decade ago. As you know, he is also yet another established Cupertino executive to use experience at Apple and tap his peers in an effort to transform an industry and rethink a company. Another one: The iPod Godfather Tony Fadell whose intelligent thermostat made quite a stir among the technophiles. Not everyone succeeds, as evident in the case of former Apple hardware chief Jon Rubinstein, who just left Hewlett-Packard following a series of missteps with webOS and Palm.

Due to take over CEO post at the American mid-range department store chain on Feb. 1, Johnson on Wednesday shed more light on a new strategy for an ailing JC Penney, and boy, does it draw from everything he learned during the Apple gig. He conveniently kicked off his presentation with a slide adorned by an Apple logo, which was immediately followed by another “What Were You Thinking?” slide.

Johnson then launched into an appraisal of Apple, likening the iPhone maker to a prime model of lasting brand experiences. Johnson, who left Target for Apple in 2000, recalled that at the time: “There wasn’t one positive believer who thought an Apple retail store could work.”  He then put up a slide depicting the Grand Central outlet, a massive new Apple store built inside New York City’s landmark Grand Central Terminal.

Reiterating how he built Apple Stores on experiences, not commissions, the executive noted:Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

It’s not about buying. It’s about enriching someone’s life. [...] The magic of the store that makes everyone want to come is all the stuff you get beyond the transaction, ’cause at Apple, the relationship doesn’t end when you buy. That’s where it begins. And we’re going to do that at JC Penney.

A few other interesting highlights are below:Hello Kitty iPhone 4S Covers|Hello Kitty iPhone 4 Covers

The decision to leave Apple for JC Penney was “the best decision I’ve made yet,” and the toughest part was breaking it to Steve Jobs. Johnson recalled Apple’s then CEO simply looked up at him and asked, “Are you serious?” According to asummary of his talk provided by ifoApplestore, which specializes in Apple retail, and this QuickTime webcast provided by JC Penney, the incoming CEO said that despite the wide availability of Apple’s products these days, “People like to come to the Apple stores.”

The Texas-headquartered retailer wants to remake its outdated retail strategy, so they hired Ron Johnson to take the reigns. He’s facing an uphill struggle, though, as JC Penney’s share is down to 5 percent, matching Apple’s retail share a decade ago. The Apple Retail store as we know it has become a retailing phenomenon, with many calling Apple America’s greatest retailer.Coach iPhone 4 Case|Coach iPhone 4S Case

Department stores nowadays are not that crowded, because the sales concept is broken and the experience plagued with countless, often meaningless promotions. “Steve would have called this insanity,” Johnson said concerning the 590 mail promotions JC Penney amassed last year. Contrast this to Apple’s carefully chosen promotions, ran sparingly. “At some point, you as a brand look desperate,” he warned.Coach iPhone 4 Cases |Coach iPhone 4S Cases

Founded in Wyoming in 1902 by James Cash Penney and William Henry McManus, JC Penney today runs 1,107 department stores in all U.S. states and Puerto Rico and operates catalog sales merchant offices nationwide in many small markets.

Bill Gates sent special letter to Jobs before his passing

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Bill Gates sat down to talk, among other things, about his relationship with Steve Jobs. Gates recalled his often up and down relationship with Jobs changing somewhat after the launch of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2007: “Steve and I did an event together, and he couldn’t have been nicer…I got a fair bit of time with him in his last year.” When Gates ultimately learned of Steve’s medical condition, he wrote him a letter:Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases

“I told Steve about how he should feel great about what he had done and the company he had built. I wrote about his kids, whom I had got to know…There was no peace to make. We were not at war. We made great products, and competition was always a positive thing. There was no [cause for] forgiveness.”

After Jobs’ passing, Gates said he received a phone call from Laurene Powell, Jobs’ wife, who told Gates Walter Isaacson’s biography did not accurately depict the mutual respect between the two:Burberry iPhone 4 Cases|Burberry iPhone 4S Cases|Hermes iPhone 4 Cases|Hermes iPhone 4S Cases

She said: ‘Look, this biography really doesn’t paint a picture of the mutual respect you had.’ And she said he’d appreciated my letter and kept it by his bed.”

Gates also talked about Jobs’ work in general, calling him an “incredible genius,” but also noting many times Jobs’ would say critical things about him:

“Steve was an incredible genius who contributed immensely to the field I was in. We had periods, like the early Macintosh, when we had more people working on it than they did. And then we were competitors. The personal computers I worked on had a vastly higher [market] share than Apple until really the last five or six years, where Steve’s very good work on the Mac and on iPhones and iPads did extremely well. It’s quite an achievement, and we enjoyed each [other’s work]….He spent a lot of his time competing with me. There are lots of times when Steve said [critical] things about me. If you took the more harsh examples, you could get quite a litany.

Gates also recently sat down for an interview with Yahoo!  and ABC News to discuss his relationship with Jobs and their last meeting. Get the full story here.

Court filings show Steve Jobs told Google to stop poaching Apple engineers

Following reports earlier today that U.S. District Judge Lucy H Koh would allow a lawsuit claiming Apple, Google and five other companies entered “no-poach” agreements, court documents made public today show in 2007 former Apple CEO Steve Jobs asked Google’s Eric Schmidt to “stop trying to recruit an Apple engineer.” Reuters reported:Designer iPhone 4 Cases|Designer iPhone 4S Cases|Designer iPhone 4 Case|Designer iPhone 4S Case

The email from Jobs to Schmidt was disclosed on Friday in the course of civil litigation against Apple, Google and five other tech companies. The proposed class action, brought by five software engineers, accuses the companies of conspiring to keep employee compensation low by eliminating competition for skilled labor.

According to excerpts of the documents posted by Reuters, Jobs wrote the following in an email to Schmidt after someone at Google tried to recruit an Apple engineer:Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

“I would be very pleased if your recruiting department would stop doing this.”

Schmidt apparently responded by forwarding the email to someone else at Google, requesting they fulfill Jobs’ request. Google’s staffing director responded to the email claiming the Google employee that attempted to contact the Apple engineer would be fired:

[The employee] “will be terminated within the hour…Please extend my apologies as appropriate to Steve Jobs”

The court case will continue, but Reuters noted the Judge handling the civil lawsuit said it could potentially become several classic actions.
