Aggressive Driving, Road Rage and Accidents9/13/2011

If you have ever attended a defensive driving class, you have likely had the pleasure of viewing the Disney sponsored cartoon about the dangers of angry drivers and driving. The cartoon is silly, but the most striking thing about the short film is that it was made in the 1950s and refers to highways as "new" inventions, yet it is still shown in classes to this day. Road rage has been an issue practically since drivers first hit the road.

Types of Aggressive Driving

Many people are willing to admit that they have a bit of an anger problem when they get behind the wheel. Of these self identifying road ragers, many of them seem proud of their behavior on the road. But while it may seem cool that you are "tough" or unwilling to be "pushed around," aggressive driving is nothing to be proud of. In fact, it is the cause of thousands of car accidents every single year in the United States. Many of those car accidents are fatal.

There are many driving infractions that qualify as aggressive driving. One definition as put forth by the New York State Police department is anyone who "operates a motor vehicle in a selfish, bold or pushy manner, without regard for the right or safety of the other users of the streets and highways."
