$ Study Tips For The NREMT by Bobby Ross (11/22/2010)
PREPARING BEFORE THE NREMT EXAM: Allocate Time To Study Allocate plenty of time in advance to review. NREMT exams are not something you should cram for. Set up a schedule and build a habit of studying for the NREMT during this period. Allocate the start of every study session when you are most alert to the areas you have a lot of difficulty. It's a good exercise to study that evening, the material you discussed that day. If you attend an evening NREMT class, review promptly the next morning. Audio Reviews Audio Reviews such as those you can put on an MP3 player or play with a CD in your car is an excellent source for review. The repetition of principles and theories will genuinely strengthen what you learn in class and review from your notes and textbooks. These are excellent study tools for all those times when you would ordinarily be unable to review for the NREMT such as in the car, working out, running, etc. Create a Quick Reference Outline A very helpful tool you can create while you study is to sum up and outline the material which can be used later as a study sheet. This accomplishes two things. First, it provides you with a quick overview of your NREMT content that is easily accessible for review at a later time. Also, by outlining and re-writing your content, it reinforces what you learned that day. Anytime you re-write a principle in your own terms, it significantly reinforces those concepts. Flashcards Flashcards are a great addition to your review, especially when you need to memorize terms or simple concepts like drug actions, indications and dosages. Not to mention, flashcards imprinted on notecards are simple to take with you wherever you go so you can make use of downtime to study such as when you travel, during lunch, etc. When creating your NREMT study guide flashcards, be sure to put them into groups for easy "grab and go" review. Get Assistance From Your Instructor Don't limit the expertise of your instructor to just the amount of time you spend in school. The majority of course instructors are more than willing to help you outside of school, particularly if you are struggling with a specific topic. With the NREMT, it's critical that you have a complete understanding of all of the difficult subjects that you will be expected to know for the NREMT exam. Study Groups This is HUGE! If you don't currently have a review team together, get one. Keep two points in mind when you are attempting to find study companions. First, look for those that seem to "Get It" in class. This should be obvious. It doesn't do you any good to study with individuals that are having difficulties unless you believe that by helping them you yourself will obtain additional expertise. They say that if you can explain a principle, then you genuinely comprehend it. Secondly, seek those that reside near you. This is also important. Find people that reside close to you. You will be more likely to keep a review schedule if you live near each other as opposed to one of you being forced to drive an hour or more each time you meet. Also, keep your NREMT study periods to a reasonable amount of time and have a strategy as to what you will cover. I like 2-3 hours, max. Practice Examinations I put Practice Exams at the bottom on purpose. While I think practice tests may be valuable, I feel that students often rely on them too much. Some people complete a few practice assessments from a book, do pretty well, and feel they're finished. This can really give a person false hope. I do think that practice exams are good for assisting in recognizing the areas you need to focus your study. With that being said, the most useful way to pass the NREMT is to simply understand your stuff. This is where practice exams fall short. I feel that incorporating a good practice test with a good audio review guide, flashcards and review sheets provide the most benefit.

$ The NREMT Exam - What To Expect by Bobby Ross (11/22/2010)
In order to study and prepare most effectively for the NREMT EMT or Paramedic exam, you must first understand how the NREMT exam, is designed. The NREMT exam is designed as a Computer Adaptive Test (often called CAT or CAT). Computer Adaptive Tests are computer based exams which adapt to the responses of the examinees through Item Response Theory (IRT), which logically provides questions based on the his or her response to the prior question. These exams are quite different than the tradition exam that flows in a more linear fashion by simply providing questions randomly selected from a pool of questions. Computer Adaptive tests are commonly used where the topics covered and the skills measured are often times considered to be life altering. In the development of these tests, each question is carefully calibrated to determine its level of difficulty. This is done by adding pilot questions to each test which do not count against the test takers final score. Once a degree of difficulty is determined, a "level of ability" required to answer the question correctly can be established. By doing this, some questions can be considered less difficult and require a lesser level of knowledge to answer correctly while others can be considered more difficult requiring a higher level of knowledge to answer correctly. The total number of questions given to each candidate is different when taking these types of examination. As questions are answered, correct and incorrect responses determine the level of difficulty of the next question until a pattern, or level of knowledge is determined. Usually this is accomplished by beginning with a series of questions at or below the level of knowledge required to pass the exam. When correct answers are given, the computer will select questions that require a greater level of knowledge to answer correctly. If the majority of the questions in the series of questions is answered correctly, the computer will select another series of questions at an even higher level difficulty continuing until the examinee reaches his or her maximum level of competency. This is why the NREMT exam often times feels more difficult than other tests, and also why the NREMT exam takers don't feel very confident in the outcome at the end of the test. Over the course of the exam, correct and incorrect answers based on their level of severity are placed on a standard scale to determine the overall ability of the candidate. When the computer determines that the person being tested consistently answers appropriately above or below the standard, entry-level competency, the review ends. The examinee who demonstrates the ability to answer most of his or her questions correctly often finds that their test is concludes quickly. The examination will end when the computer is 95% sure that the student has reached the minimal level set.

$ Facebook Messages Will Change the Face of E-Mail (11/15/2010)
Someone asked me why Facebook would want to get uggs australia 100%into the e-mail business. I told him that there were 500 million excellent reasons. With Facebook's official Facebook Messages announcement  that it's unveiling radically reimagined messaging, Facebook has, indeed, stepped into the e-mail fray, though the company is at pains to call it anything but e-mail. Email, messaging, whatever you call it, Facebook's Facebook Messages rethink will certainly change the way we think about e-mail.Some of what Facebook unveiled is not particularly revolutionary: folders, junk mail, a Facebook.com e-mail address. However everything else will take e-mail and messaging to new, unexplored places. Imagine your e-mail system choosing for your how to message a contact based on where you are and what you're doing. I'll be honest, it might uggs 5245freak me out if the message I started typing in Facebook "e-mail" suddenly shifted to Facebook "chat" because the contact happened to be live on the Facebook service. That agility, however, will likely be welcomed by the core Facebook audience.Such an agile message system will quickly break down the walls separating texting, IM and e-mail. This is a truer form of conversational interaction than the "conversations" on Gmail, which is really nothing more than message threads.There will be privacy cheap uggs outletconcerns, because that glare shines on almost anything Facebook introduces. The now fluid mix of various conversation platforms will startle some, but there's nothing intrinsically intrusive or unexpectedly open here. Chat, Messages and SMS conversations as they currently stand are point-to-point conversations, easily controlled by Facebook users. If, for example, you want to hide your existence as a live user on Facebook Chat, you can do so. In theory, if you're not visible on chat in the new service, then your messages could not automatically switch gears.One of the big changes will be all the incoming mail. New services and people who aren't even on Facebook will be introduced to your Facebook e-mail address and to your Facebook inbox. What a marvelous branding engine〞even more impressive because Facebook did not use the much shorter FB.com. I'm sure Facebook members will happily use the new vanity e-mail domain. It will be cheap uggsinteresting to see how much of users' every day mail actually ends up in the Facebook in-box. Facebook is providing some storage space, and I'm certain it'll be able to handle all the mail you can throw at it. I bet, though, that some mail may take a while to make it into the Facebook e-mail inbox. Will anyone want their financial and healthcare e-mail messages in an inbox inside Facebook? I doubt it.Facebook's Zuckerberg said he isn't positioning Facebook Messages as a Gmail killer, and I believe him. I don't see people leaving Gmail or any other messaging service for uggs outletFacebook Messages. On the other hand, 500 million people getting a blend of social and e-mail messaging in one package, may start to demand the same from their other e-mail services. Microsoft, Yahoo and Google are certainly trying to blend the social with e-mail, but coming from the other direction〞e-mail-to-social, which is a much tougher climb. People have a deep-seated distrust of e-mail going social, especially when it comes to their contacts. I think that was the problem with Google Buzz. No one was happy when Google created all your Buzz friends out of your Gmail contacts, without first asking permission. Google's spent most of the time back peddling away from this decision ever since (even fending off a lawsuit). I'm not sure Buzz will ever recover from this first misstep.Facebook's contacts are already part of your uggs 5803social circle. I don't expect anyone to squawk.Though I just said Facebook message won't kill other e-mail messaging platforms, I do believe it will change the e-mail landscape. The line between personal and private mail will become much more uggs 1873pronounced. The linear world of work email and even Gmail-style services will be about tasks, work and getting things done. Personal e-mail will be about fluid social interaction that can happen anywhere, at anytime and any way Facebook likes it.

$ Did midterm elections lift Sarah Palin higher, or not? (11/3/2010)

A day after Election 2010 one thing is clear: Sarah Palin, the moose-hunting former GOP vice-presidential candidate, just raised the stakes for a tea party-flavored 2012 presidential run that, let's face it, could start in a matter of months. To begin with, Ms. Palin's endorsement win-loss record was 27-15 (with eight races still undecided), coming amid a historic Republican midterm sweep of a kind the party hadn't enjoyed since the 1920s. Palin, who has become the "mama grizzly" embodiment of the antitax tea party and disaffected independents across the United States, accomplished two key goals with her contribution: She proved that, more than a year out of office, she is perceived as a Reaganesque player in national politics while at the same time laying a groundwork of new friends in suddenly high places. RELATED: Tea Party Top 10 biggest winners and losers But the former Alaska governor also played a role in thwarting a GOP Senate takeover, pretty much hoisting Christine O'Donnell and Sharron Angle past more mainstream Republican primary contenders who may have won on Nov. 2 每 possibly giving the GOP a majority. Consequently, Palin's hit-and-miss effect on Election Day has reinvigorated a debate within the GOP about whether a Palin presidential candidacy would work against President Obama, who is all but certain to run, in 2012. "In terms of Sarah Palin's influence, the picture is mixed," says Costas Panagopoulos, a political scientist at Fordham University in New York and editor of Campaigns and Elections magazine. "While Palin's influence in the [2010] general election was actually rather mild, the success that she's had in this election cycle in remaining a player in national politics and having the capacity to mobilize voters across this country still makes her a force to be reckoned with." Palin's misfires Magnifying Palin's misfires, two high-profile candidates whom the news media tracked extensively 每 Ms. O'Donnell and Ms. Angle 每 lost in the election, in O'Donnell's case by double digits. Dustups like O'Donnell's "I am not a witch" ad and Angle's awkward characterizations of ethnic teens fed into perceptions that a Sarah Palin-inspired tea party is, at its core, fringe and ultimately unlikely to find its way to the White House.

$ Bernanke Says New Purchases Should Aid Economic Growth With Lower Rates (11/3/2010)

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said resuming large-scale asset purchases should boost economic growth through lower borrowing costs and higher stock prices and that concerns about the strategy are ※overstated.§ ※This approach eased financial conditions in the past and, so far, looks to be effective again,§ Bernanke said today in an opinion article for the Washington Post released hours after the Fed announced the $600 billion of Treasury buying through June in a second round of unconventional monetary stimulus. Central bankers in the world*s largest economy are struggling to bring down a jobless rate that has persisted at 9.5 percent or higher for 14 months. U.S. payrolls have declined for four straight months as employees hired for the census were fired and state and local governments eliminated positions to balance budgets. ※Stock prices rose and long-term interest rates fell when investors began to anticipate this additional action,§ Bernanke said. ※Easier financial conditions will promote economic growth.§ The Fed said in its statement earlier today that progress has been ※disappointingly slow§ in bringing down joblessness close to a 26-year high and that the asset purchases will ※promote a stronger pace of economic recovery.§ Bernanke said that while ※asset purchases are relatively unfamiliar as a tool of monetary policy, some concerns about this approach are overstated,§ including the idea that the money supply will expand too much and eventually lead to a surge in inflation. The Fed*s previous asset purchases did not result in higher inflation, and ※we are confident that we have the tools to unwind these policies at the appropriate time,§ Bernanke said. Preferred Gauge The Fed*s preferred gauge for consumer prices, which excludes food and energy, rose 1.2 percent in September from a year earlier, the slowest pace since 2001. Fed policy makers have a long-run goal of 1.7 percent to 2 percent inflation they see as consistent with achieving legislative mandates for maximum employment and stable prices. Bernanke said the Fed could ※hardly be satisfied§ with an unemployment rate near 10 percent and inflation lower than what Fed officials aim for in the long run. Bernanke defended Fed efforts to raise inflation, saying that ※although low inflation is generally good, inflation that is too low can pose risks to the economy -- especially when the economy is struggling.§ ※In the most extreme case, very low inflation can morph into deflation,§ he said. That can ※contribute to long periods of economic stagnation,§ Bernanke said. Bernanke said that low and falling inflation indicates that the economy has many idle resources and that further monetary policy efforts will not cause the economy to overheat. The Fed chief*s last newspaper op-ed was in November 2009, opposing legislative proposals to strip the Fed of bank- regulatory powers and allow audits of monetary policy.

$ Claiming Moss a risk-free gamble for Titans (11/3/2010)

Claiming Randy Moss off waivers Wednesday made sense for the Titans〞a playoff contender led by the longest-tenured coach in the NFL. Jeff Fisher is a player's coach on solid ground, unlike Brad Childress of the Vikings (2-5), who is under fire because of his team's struggles and the failed Moss-to-Minnesota trade. The Titans (5-3) already were winning, and they did not surrender any draft picks or players for Moss. If Moss acts out, Fisher can release Moss and move on. However, Fisher hopes Moss will be a big-play threat without bringing big-time problems. "We had an opportunity to upgrade our offense, and Randy has been a tremendous threat wherever he has been," Fisher said in a statement. "We will bring him up to speed as quickly as possible." Moss is both talented and eccentric, so there are no guarantees he will work out with the Titans. Already this season, both the Patriots and Vikings have sent Moss packing. Even Brett Favre, who was thrilled when the Vikings traded for Moss on Oct. 6, admitted Moss' effort varied play-to-play. "Did he hustle every play?" Favre said Wednesday. "I don't know if Randy's ever hustled every play. That's just Randy." However, here are five reasons why Moss makes sense for the Titans: 1. Fisher. He has not last 17 years as an NFL head coach without deftly handling strong-willed players (see: Albert Haynesworth). Fisher said numerous Titans players begged him to pursue Moss after he was surprisingly waived Monday night by the Vikings. Fisher obliged. But in return, Fisher asked his locker room leaders to help keep Moss from blowing up the team's chemistry. 2. Money. The Titans only have to pay Moss' salary for the final nine games, almost $3.4 million. Meanwhile, Moss wants a new contract. If this marriage with the Titans ends in failure, Moss will further damage his market value. According to an NFL Network report, the Titans were the only team that put in a waiver claim for Moss. Teams desperate for wide receiver help like the Bears, Rams, Redskins and Seahawks all passed on Moss. If that does not get Moss' attention, nothing will. Moss must show NFL general managers and coaches his best side, not his worst, or he never will get anything close to the money he seeks in the free-agent market next spring. 3. Style. Moss' game fits the Titans. Quarterback Vince Young can throw deep, and All-Pro running back Chris Johnson demands extra attention. Moss' mere presence outside will make opponents reluctant to crowd the box to stuff Johnson. 4. Timing. The Titans have a bye this week, giving Moss extra time to learn the offense before the Nov. 14 game at Miami. Meanwhile, Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt (hamstring) already has been ruled out for that game. That makes Moss' acquisition even more opportune. 5. Winning. Moss in a losing situation is a recipe for trouble. But Moss with a solid team like the Titans gives this a decent shot to work.

$ San Francisco Giants lose to Texas Rangers in Game 3 of World Series (11/1/2010)
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Giants are a team that washes off defeat and looks on the bright side. So in that spirit, there is this: They cannot clinch the first World Series championship in the city's history on Halloween night. And that should come as a relief to the fine folks working the switchboard for the San Francisco Police Department. Thus ends the bright side from Saturday night's stompin' good time for the locals in the Metroplex. Jonathan Sanchez got railroaded by the Texas Rangers, and the Giants offense, which glittered as it rolled along in two home games, turned back into a pumpkin in a 4-2 loss at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. There won't be a greased slide to a parade on Market Street. Suddenly, the Giants must win Game 4 behind 21-year-old rookie Madison Bumgarner to keep this series from becoming a best-of-three free-for-all. "You know, the momentum "... obviously we're still down one game, but it's shifted," said Josh Hamilton, the Rangers' leading man, who hit a solo home run off Sanchez. "I mean, we're at home, we've got the fans behind us. We're right where we want to be." The Giants still are the lead hound in this race, but their pace has slowed on several alarming fronts. Sanchez, operating with reduced velocity that concerned pitching coach Dave Righetti, couldn't sneak an inside heater past No. 9 hitter Mitch Moreland. His three-run home run in the second inning cued the waving towels as red fireworks streaked the sky. Pat Burrell's bat looked plenty slow, too, while he struck out in all four of his trips. "You've got to come in tomorrow, have a positive mindset, put your work in and take something positive into the game," said Burrell, who might need Jedi mind tricks to accomplish that. Cody Ross and Andres Torres hit solo home runs, but the Giants had huge holes in their lineup. Designated hitter Pablo Sandoval failed to take advantage of his rare start, going hitless in three at-bats while bouncing into a double play. And Burrell became the first Giant to strike out four times in a World Series game since Josh Devore in 1911. "I picked a bad time to struggle," said Burrell, who is 0 for 9 with eight strikeouts in the series and has struck out 19 times in 38 postseason at-bats. "There's no way around it. I'm getting pitches to hit and just not doing anything with them. I'm chasing some balls off the plate. "I'm supposed to "... be a presence at the plate. That's what I'm here for, and I just didn't do that. You've got to be accountable for what you do, and certainly I didn't get the job done tonight, not even close." Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he would "sleep on" the decision of a designated hitter for Game 4 today. Asked about sticking with Burrell, he didn't commit, but he lauded the big hits Burrell has provided the Giants this season.

With its blend of music and jokes, the rally appeared to tap into a growing trend in which entertainment and popular culture blend with politics, particularly for younger Americans. One out of 10 Americans now get their latest headlines straight from Stewart's Daily Show, according to a summer poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center. If the stage was politically neutral, members of the audience leaned left -- with Sarah Palin and Delaware Republican Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell top targets. ``Look at Christine O'Donnell,'' said William Cutter, 50, an advertising executive from Washington. ``She has come to represent the joke that is this election. She's abundantly unqualified. Jon Stewart has hit a nerve with the American public. No one speaks to the middle.'' Liberal groups such as NARAL Pro-Choice America worked to tap the crowd for support. President Barack Obama's political operation, Organizing for America, held a ``Phone Bank to Restore Sanity'' afterward to try to drum up support in Tuesday's elections. The crowd was a mix of all ages, and included lots of people over 50 who vividly remembered when the same Mall was filled with people protesting the Vietnam War in the 1960s or urging a nuclear freeze in the 1980s. Most claimed that the quest for civility, not partisan advantage, ruled the day. I'm really concerned that we're not agreeing on anything,'' said Jean Mathisen, 63, who runs a seniors fraud-prevention program in Seattle. Reminded that the country was bitterly divided over Vietnam and civil rights during her youth, she said, ``I felt that back then, at least a lot of people wanted to work together.''

$ Comedians' rally decries rancor in politics (11/1/2010)
WASHINGTON -- Three days before hotly contested national elections, a pair of comedians drew tens of thousands to the National Mall on Saturday with a blend of jokes and music meant to counter some of the anger and fear they see in the country. Hosted by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert of the Comedy Central network, the event was called the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, with barbs pointed at popular culture, politicians and especially cable TV news -- all meant to coax Americans back to a more civil way of disagreeing. ``This is not . . . to suggest that times are not difficult and that we have nothing to fear. They are and we do,'' Stewart said as he turned serious in his closing remarks. ``But we live now in hard times, not end times. We can have animus and not be enemies.'' He lambasted the cable TV news mentality that amplifies outrageous statements, stokes fear and seeks out confrontation, singling out the left-wing media for equating tea partyers with racists and the right-wing media for ``the inability to distinguish terrorists from Muslims.'' ``The press can hold its magnifying class up to our problems,'' he said. ``Or they can use that magnifying glass to light ants on fire. . . . The press is our immune system. If they overreact to everything we get sicker.'' The message struck a chord with the large throng of people; the National Park Service no longer provides official estimates of crowds, but the National Mall was densely packed with many tens of thousands of people. ``It's the first time a message like this has resonated with me,'' said Jonathan Dugan, 37, a product engineer who flew from San Francisco to stand on the mall on a sunny fall afternoon. ``We need to get people to talk to each other in a meaningful way.'' The rally took on a festive air, with many wearing costumes and carrying irreverent signs. Among the signs: ``Give please chance,'' ``Stir Peanut Butter, Not Anger'' and ``Does this sign make my butt look big?'' The O'Jays sang their '70s hit Love Train. Actor Sam Waterston read a satiric poem about a man who refused to be scared, who would not share ``the panic over Hispanics,'' and ended up killed by a bear. Other entertainers included Cheryl Crow, Ozzy Osbourne, the Roots, and actor Don Novello portraying Father Guido Sarducci, a character from Saturday Night Live in the 1970s and 1980s.

$ Luxury Brands Still Tread Lightly With Social Media (11/1/2010)
For a sector as forward-thinking as the fashion industry, the reluctance with which it has ventured into e-commerce and other digital platforms--particularly social media--is more than a little perplexing. The affinity for traditional commerce and marketing channels is strong among many purveyors of luxury goods, both in the fashion sector and elsewhere. In an international survey of 178 premium and luxury firms in 2008, Forrester Research ( FORR - news - people ) found that only one-third of them actively sold online, though 8 out of every 10 affluent consumers use the Internet to actively research and purchase luxury goods and services on a daily basis. That number has risen significantly, but it is still strikingly low. Federico Marchetti, founder and chief executive of Italian retailer Yoox, estimates that half of luxury brands now sell directly online, though several others suggest that the percentage is higher, due largely to recession pressures. Yet many brands, particularly European manufacturers of high-end wristwatches and other luxury goods, refuse to set up shop online. From Store to Web: The Challenges of E-Commerce "We have an exclusive network of over 400 retailers but that cannot work online," Jean-Claude Biver, chief executive of Hublot, said at Reuters Global Luxury Summit last summer. "When you are online, you are not exclusive anymore." Other firms say that e-commerce is not an option because the shopping experience their brands provide cannot be successfully translated for the Web. Matt Rhodes, who directs social media strategy for a number of high-end travel and fashion companies at FreshNetworks London, observed that when consumers walk into a luxury retailer, they're paying for more than just the goods themselves. "If you're going to spend $1,000 on a pair of shoes, you want to have a glass of wine going around, the attention of staff; you want an experience as well as a purchase," he said. From store design to employee training, luxury firms have invested heavily in building these kinds of experiences for customers, making retail locations feel "less like sales rooms and more like intimate venues," Rhodes said. It's difficult to recreate that environment on the Web. Some brands, like Burberry and Christian Louboutin, offer close-up video footage of their products, allowing shoppers to examine the texture and drape of a python trench coat or glitter of a jeweled strap as if they were holding the product in the store. Online retailer Net-a-Porter replicates the high-caliber service of a brick-and-mortar store by offering same-day shipping to customers in New York and London, and handling returns for its premier customers. Oscar de la Renta extends its in-store services, such as styling advice and garment alterations, to online shoppers over phone and e-mail, CEO Alex Bolen said.

$ A hint of spring: florals, stripes, nouveau punk and more on the Paris catwalks (10/20/2010)
A pregnant Miranda Kerr on the runway at Balenciaga, plus-size pop star Beth Ditto at Jean Paul Gaultier, fortysomething model-actress Farida Khelfa at Hermes, a toddler and, separately, 53-year-old Ines de la Fressange at Chanel. You'd think designers had an open-door policy at their runway castings this season. Does all this inclusiveness signal the democratization of beauty on the runway? Are designers finally getting wise to their expanding and aging demographic? Or is it merely a fad that will come and go as fast as last season's fur capelet? It's too early to tell, but so far we like what we see. Menswear-inspired clothing had been almost totally absent from the runways for spring until Paris, where blazers, button-down shirts and tuxedos came into the picture. At Celine, designer Phoebe Philo perfected a menswear-style trouser that hangs on a woman's hips just so, as well as offering a cape-sleeve blazer as a chic alternative to the ordinary suit jacket. Stella McCartney reintroduced boyfriend blazers (they're back!) in pastel colors, paired with cropped flat-front trousers and knit polo shirts. Belgian designer Dries Van Noten brought color and lightness to his oversize blazers, full trousers and trench coats by dip-dying them in Easter-egg shades of pink, violet and cornflower blue. He also showed an elegant cream tuxedo jacket with casual wide-leg pants for daytime, while at Yves Saint Laurent, the tuxedo morphed into a sexy jumpsuit. After all the soft and colorful, 1970s-inspired collections in New York and Milan, it was a shock to see punk rear its spiky head in Paris. We saw it first at Balenciaga, where white button-down shirts came with metal-tipped collars, and black pants fastened at the side with chunky silver buckles. There were houndstooth check coats and biker jackets too, worn with mean shoes with studs on the soles. At Balmain, the look was more literally Sex Pistols, with slashed T-shirts, safety-pinned leather jackets and shredded jeans, all of which will cost a fortune. (There are rich hippies, so why not rich punks?) Jean Paul Gaultier's punk vixens wore Joan Jett wigs, biker-chick leathers and dominatrix lace and fishnet layers. Oversize, squared-off shoulders, combat boots and the cone bra re-imagined as a metal breastplate added to the aggressive, industrial chic that was also a through line at Givenchy, where silver zippers made for tough-looking decoration. The horizontal Breton stripe T-shirts that have been all over the streets like a rash since last year influenced many runways in Paris. For spring, stripes are getting even bigger and bolder. In Junya Watanabe's hands, stripes became extraordinary. Turning them every which way, he created Op Art effects on T-shirt dresses, coat dresses and long skirts. At Celine, bands of color tracing the sides and waistbands of pants added graphic appeal. The same was true at Louis Vuitton, where bright, bold stripes gave Chinoiserie-inspired dresses and clutch bags the color pop of Popsicles. Isabel Marant took stripes in a sporty direction, showing striped rugby shirtdresses. And she may really be on to something. Now that everyone has a striped T-shirt in her closet, isn't it about time the striped rugby shirt took a fashionable turn? Skirt lengths are falling fast - not that designers would expect today's woman to follow a hemline dictate. It's more of a suggestion. But after years of the miniskirt mafia cornering the market, it should be a relief to have alternatives. Long skirts at Rochas had a 1940s vibe, while the ones at Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent nodded to the season's pervasive 1970s bohemian spirit. There were also sheer black varieties at Chanel, worn with belted jackets or sweaters, for a retro ladylike look. Rick Owens made a long skirt statement all his own, pairing grand floor-sweepers with contoured leather vests. And Chloe designer Hannah MacGibbon took a ballet dancer's long, sheer, pleated skirt and put it with leotards and soft-sole ballet shoes. Which means that come spring, we won't be raiding the Army Navy store for inexpensive fashion finds, we'll be hitting Capezio. It was calm in the midst of chaos, color cutting through the darkness, a moment to stop and smell the roses. The Chanel show, set in a faux French garden with orderly hedges and serene fountains under the soaring glass ceiling of the Grand Palais, summed up the mood of the entire spring runway season. With nature being one of life's greatest escapes, it's no wonder that so many designers used flower prints and floral motifs in their collections. At Louis Vuitton and Dries Van Noten, it was an Asian garden that inspired, while Dior's John Galliano picked hibiscus and orchid blooms from the South Seas. The Emanuel Ungaro presentation had flowers bursting out all over a grassy lawn, where models in festive frocks sipped Champagne. The garden party was a rebirth for the house after a disastrous turn with Lindsay Lohan as creative adviser, and a chance for new creative director Giles Deacon to turn over a new leaf.

$ Thieves steal Chanel, Vuitton items from chic boutiques (10/20/2010)
Four men with expensive tastes and no regard for the law have stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars of Chanel and Louis Vuitton merchandise in three separate thefts at stores in Boston, police said. The men stormed into the Chanel Boutique on high-end Newbury Street a little after 3 p.m. Friday, snatching about 40 handbags, two jackets and other accessories worth more than $100,000 before running away through the nearby Boston Public Garden. The same men allegedly made similar heists Sept. 16 and 26 at the Louis Vuitton Boston Copley store in the pricey Copley Place mall. Surveillance cameras at the Chanel Boutique captured images of the four suspects. Elaine Driscoll, a spokeswoman for Boston police, said investigators were looking to identify the men in the footage.

$ Karl Lagerfeld*s Own Private Island (10/20/2010)
Karl Lagerfeld, the be-gloved genius behind the Chanel cotton ball, is designing an island. Somehow, this feels inevitable. "The legendary Chanel designer has teamed up with prestigious Miami-based architecture firm Oppenheim and the KOR hotel group to create the manmade island situated 20 km off the coast of Dubai," reports Vogue UK. The island, dubbed the world's first-ever "fashion island," will house not only luxury boutiques, but three highest-end hotels and 150 villas, and should be up and running by 2014. (For some mind-blowing renderings, check out this slideshow.) If you're looking to set your sights on a cheaper, more immediate fashion project not located in the UAE, look no further than Matthew Williamson, the British designer synonymous with vibrant palettes and graphic prints. 0diggsdigg Williamson is launching a lower-priced line called Muse by Matthew Williamson. Diffusion collections - from Zac Posen to Marc Jacobs to Scott Sternberg*s recently debuted sister line, Girl - are a natural step for high-end designers these days. ※The British label has created a new license with Italian company Mariella Burani Fashion Group and will unveil its new collection in February 2011,§ says Vogue UK. Not much is known about the line as yet, as Williams says details are still being fleshed out, but he describes the look as a younger, slightly less financially secure companion to his current customer. If Williamson*s collection for H&M back in 2009 is any indication, there will be plenty of boldly colored party dresses, spirited accessories, and a few sleek sets of trousers and blazers to boot.

$ Adidas Pulls $10M iAd Campaign After Three Rejections (10/20/2010)
According to the Business Insider, seemingly sick of Steve Jobs' control issues, Adidas has canceled a $10 million iAd campaign after its submitted campaign was rejected three times. It's not a first, however. In August, Chanel walked away after too much meddling by Apple with its creative. Adidas isn't commenting and neither is Apple other than to say it believes Adidas will still advertise on the platform. But Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is commenting and she thinks Apple's going to be in trouble with it's strict stance on iAd acceptance. In an interview with Reuters, she said, "That's going to fall apart for them. Advertisers are not going to have that type of control over them. Apple wants total control over those ads." As important as the iAd may be, it pales in comparison to the disdain a brand (and its agency) has for anyone interfering with the creative process. One could argue all Apple is trying to do is keep crappy ads off the iAd platform. Every publisher has the right to reject whatever they want for whatever reason the choose. But heavy-handed creative oversight just isn't going to play. Not with the egos that exist in this industry. But that may all be moot as the iPhone isn't the only game in town when it comes to mobile platforms. According to Nielsen, while the iOS does have 28 percent market share as of August, RIM/Blackberry has 31 percent and Android has 19 percent, a dramatic increase over the 8 percent it had in January. However, of those who bought a smart phone in the last six months, Android is the most popular OS with 32 percent share followed by Apple and RIM/Blackberry with about 25 percent each. The moral of the story? Not everyone uses Apple's iOS. In fact, it's not even a market share leader. And in the face of Android, it's destined to decline in market share. So Steve Jobs might want to examine his control issue, hedge his bets and stop trying to play creative director over every campaign.

$ Keira Knightley Dazzles in Chanel Couture (10/20/2010)
Whether Keira Knightley is purposely trying to kill people with an overdose of fab fashion is unknown, but she's certainly doing a good job and well, we're not about to complain. Today, she dazzled in not just one, but two killer outfits. Earlier Keira donned a swoon-worthy Rodarte outfit, then in the evening she pulled out all the stops in a jaw-dropping cream Chanel Couture dress. The breathtaking number is from the Fall 2010 collection. The pearls on the main bodice give the appearance of a classic Chanel tweed from afar, but a closer inspection reveals it's actually fully beaded from top to bottom. Panels of the dress are cut out and draped with strings of pearls. From behind, the dress is no less dramatic with its rows of buttons and daring low-cut back. All in all, this is one heck of a dress. Couture is hand sewn〞wonder how many hours it took to put this beauty together! Keira has been out of the spotlight for a while, but we're glad she's back because she's kicking some major fashion ass.

$ A tangibly bright idea takes off for designer (10/20/2010)
Alex Beim was struck one day with the idea of making a massive, bouncing, glowing ball. It was a classic light-bulb moment that became an obsession. In struggling to make his dream come true over the past four years, Beim has gone from the obscurity of a small studio in East Vancouver to some high-profile clients. These range from pop bands like the Chemical Brothers and Green Day to the Blue Man Group, the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and most recently, French fashion house Chanel. Beim is the first to admit he's a lucky man. But as a, "creative technologist," it's the work, not the big names, that drives him. Beim is the 38-year-old founder of Tangible Interaction, a small company that creates interactive installations, mainly for the entertainment and advertising industries, but also as public art. Tangible, one of only a few companies in this field around the world, rents its interactive products and designs custom concepts. The company's roots lie in Beim's original vision of an illuminated lightweight orb -now named the zygote -that changes colour each time it's touched. After seeing a Building Interactive Playgrounds Competition in Italy, Beim hatched the idea of creating an interactive installation for a music festival. He pictured the balls bouncing above the crowd, and set about making it a reality. "I had this idea but I had no idea how to do it, so this marathon started -how am I going to make it happen?" Beim says. "For the first time in my life, I was personally engaged in something I really wanted to do, whereas before then I was (as a graphic designer) always designing logos and identities and banner ads for other people. But I was never able to motivate myself to do something for myself. "This time I did, and it was just mind-blowing how I could just come home from work and work on this, then wake up in the morning and keep thinking about it. It became like an obsession." Beim submitted his idea when the playgrounds competition was held again in 2007. To his surprise, he won. At the music festival, zygotes were unleashed upon the crowd and became an instant hit. A week later, Beim uploaded a video of the event on the web, which was promptly picked up by blogs. Calls from potential clients started to come in. Within a month, Beim signed up his first client: renting out zygotes to the Chemical Brothers for a concert in Romania. Born and raised in a creative family in Uruguay, Beim ran a graphic design firm before moving to Vancouver in 1998 to be with his Canadian wife. At the time zygotes became big in 2007, Beim was still holding down a full-time job as an associate creative director at Vancouver ad agency Tribal DDB. By 2008, business was so good that he quit his day job to formally start Tangible Interaction, with just one employee. Little about Tangible's growth has been conventional. It took off at a time the global financial system was on the brink of collapse and has managed to get steady work, despite not advertising. Asked what advice he would give to other startups, he replies simply: "Just do something unique, which is probably very hard. "But I think if you don't have an edge, getting business every day is going to be very hard. And just being very passionate about it -don't do it for the business, do it because you love it because I think that shows."
