Merritt Island woman, 28, grows a farm in her yard

For Jennifer Masson, an advertising and marketing consultant who lives on Merritt Island, one of the delicious highlights of her life is the organic garden in her backyard.

And, for Masson, 28, delicious it truly is -- both in sight and taste. Like many gardeners, Masson is especially enthusiastic about the results of her efforts.

"We're eating weekly from the garden," she said of herself and her friends. "Just two weeks ago, I put up 12 jars of pickled beets.

"Right now I have cow peas, Kentucky beans, watermelon and pumpkin vines -- I even have a mini-watermelon growing already. I have tons of culinary herbs. I have four types of basil, rosemary bushes, three types of thyme, sage, marjoram, oregano, parsley, mint, cilantro and dill. I just harvested a ton of dill seeds."

And the list goes on: zucchini, two types of sweet potatoes, yellow squash, celery, onions and eight types of heirloom tomatoes (meaning not artificially genetically altered).

"I have sunflowers and other flowers, like zinnias. I planted them for the bees," Masson said.

Then there are the trees: citrus trees, a fig tree and a mulberry tree.

"Hopefully, in a few years there will be some shade," she said.

All this is in a regular, normal-size yard, Masson notes. But, like gardeners everywhere, she already wants more.

"I do plan on expanding my garden again by about 33 percent," she said.

For Masson, whose work clients include Community Foundation for Brevard -- which gives grants to nonprofit organizations -- and Southern Photo, the gardening was an outlet.

She grew up in Miami and graduated from Florida International University there. Soon she was working for a large ad agency and handling McDonald's Latin American account.

"I came here to Brevard to be with my mom while she was fighting cancer. She's alright now, and I just stayed here," Masson said. "I started gardening about three years ago. Now, I'd like to have no lawn, just food."
