Some Casemakers Suggest iPad 3 to Be Called iPad HD

Gizmodo is floating a rumor that the name for Apple's Coach iPhone 4 Case next tablet will be iPad HD, rather than iPad 3. They base this information on alleged part listings from Griffin and Belkin.

Accessories manufacturers don't have a clue about Apple Coach iPhone 4S Case marketing plans until the very last minute. They usually get the physical specifications for new product versions in advance, so they can have products ready for launch. They also may get information about naming for product packaging, close to the release.

We are skeptical about this assumption that third-party accessory makers get information about unreleased Apple products, but share the rumor for the sake of discussion. In the past, Apple may have disclosed the designs of new products with third parties, but Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the company stopped the practice because of leaks.

Given Apple's recent propensity to name Designer iPhone 4 Cases and iPad models using a numerical system, it is likely that the next iPad will follow this trend.

Universal and Fox movies blocked from iCloud on new Apple TV?

As we predicted, Apple quickly unveiled a refreshed Apple TV today at its media event in San Francisco before moving onto the new iPad. On top of 1080p video streaming, perhaps one of the biggest features of the device’s upgraded UI is the ability to access purchased movies stored in iCloud— just like with music and TV shows. Unfortunately, according to a report from AllThingsD, it looks like not all content will be accessible. Content from Comcast’s Universal and News Corp.’s Fox will not be available due to deals currently in place with HBO。Best iPhone 4S Case|Best iPhone 4 Case

A studio executive tells me that Apple does not have all six of the major studios on board. And here’s confirmation from a source with first-hand knowledge: News Corp.’s Fox and Comcast’s Universal aren’t in, because they have preexisting deals with Time Warner’s HBO that give the pay-TV service exclusive “windows.” (News Corp. also owns this Web site.)

AllthingsD said that means those who own “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” and many other Fox or Universal movies, will be out of luck— at least for now. HBO spokesperson Jeff Cusson told AllthingsD a solution could be coming soon:Best iPad 3 Cases

“With every technological enhancement, we have always been able to find common ground with our studio partners, and we’re sure that will be the result here.”

The Justice Department probing Apple and five major US publishers over alleged price fixing of electronic books

The Wall Street Journal reports that the United States Justice Department has threatened to launch an antitrust lawsuit against Apple and five of the nation’s biggest books publishers over an alleged price fixing that has resulted in higher prices of e-books.Designer iPhone 4 Cases|Designer iPhone 4S Cases|Designer iPhone 4 Case|Designer iPhone 4S Case

Several of the parties have held talks to settle the antitrust case and head off a potentially damaging court battle. If successful, such a settlement could have wide-ranging repercussions for the industry, potentially leading to cheaper e-books for consumers. However, not every publisher is in settlement discussions.

The government is specifically aiming to probe CBS Corp.’s Simon & Schuster Inc.; Lagardere SCA’s Hachette Book Group; Pearson PLC’s Penguin Group (USA); Macmillan, a unit of Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH; and HarperCollins Publishers Inc., a unit of News Corp. , which also owns The Wall Street Journal.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

At question: The so-called agency model where publishers freely set prices of their titles on Apple’s iBookstore, with the Cupertino company keeping 30 percent of the proceeds. The freedom to pick the price has led most, if not all, publishers to raise prices of e-books across the board as they feared customers would get accustomed to inexpensive $9.99 Kindle books from Amazon.

Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch already gave a deposition to the Justice Department saying abandoning the agency model would allow a single party to achieve dominance in the marketplace, alluding to Amazon. According to the people familiar with the matter, the Justice Department believes that Apple and the publishers “acted in concert to raise prices across the industry, and is prepared to sue them for violating federal antitrust laws”.

Such a serious accusation might harm Apple and publishers so it’s conceivable they’ll do whatever it takes to avoid an antitrust lawsuit. Another issue is Apple’s iBooks contract that includes a clause precluding publishers from selling e-books to other parties at a cheaper rate. Publishers are also being scrutinized for their 2009 practice of “windowing” e-books for a limited time after the publication of the hardcover edition. Of course, Uncle Sam is following in the footsteps of the European Commission which last December launched an investigation determining whether Apple and five major e-book publishers have colluded to restrict competition in the market for e-books, thereby breaching EU antitrust rules that prohibit cartels and restrictive business practices. The five European publishers being scrutinized by the Commission are:

Hachette Livre, a unit of France’s Lagardere Publishingl; Harper Collins, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s U.S.-based News Corp.; CBS Corp.’s Simon & Schuster; Penguin, owned by U.K. publishing house Pearson Group; and Germany’s Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holzbrinck.

The European Commission will be examining the agency agreements Apple signed with e-book retailers which specify important terms of business, amongst which are price points and the retailer’s cut of the profit. The EU probe arrived after the Commission had conducted a raid of the offices of several e-book publishers in March of last year.

AT&T vs. Verizon LTE smackdown! Tests from Yerba Buena today

We’ve tested AT&T vs. Verizon’s LTE  in NYC and our guy on the ground in San Francisco was able to test LTE at Yerba Buena today.  Results? AT&T smoked Verizon in a bunch of areas around the “new iPad” event.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

Those are similar to the  results in NYC and we hear the same thing happens in Irvine, CA, for instance.

Why is this?  We have out theories.

  • One major reason is that Verizon’s network is already pretty full of Androids running 4G while AT&T has only released a handful of devices with LTE. (this might also be why Apple used AT&T LTE at the event today)  The story might change when the flood of iPads come crashing in (for both companies).Chanel iPhone 4 Cases|Chanel iPhone 4S Cases|Chanel iPhone 4 Case|Chanel iPhone 4S Case
  • Also, AT&T’s step down is to HSPA+ which is a lot faster than Verizon’s EVDO so perhaps AT&T has some faster legacy backhaul in place.
  • In Verizon’s favor is that they’ve been running LTE for much longer (with some significant recent outages) than AT&T and they seem to do much better on those Consumer Reports customer satisfaction-type surveys (which usually also take voice quality into consideration).

The plans that Apple has in place would seem to favor AT&T as well, especially when you consider the 29,000 US Wifi hotspots.  At $30/month, you get 3GB from AT&T, 2GB from Verizon.

Verizon’s strong point has traditionally been its voice service over AT&T and perhaps one reason why in the past they’ve been able to charge a premium..  For data only, the playing field is a little more wide open, however.

It’s obvious now? The next iPhone is called…“the new iPhone”

So about two weeks ago we got a tip from a reliable source that Apple was going to call the iPhone 5 (or whatever)- the new “iPhone”.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

That seemed a little nuts at the time but what a difference a Keynote makes. As Christian explained, Apple chopped the suffix off if the iPad as part of a branding makeover that will likely expand.  Just like iMac is not called iMac 1,2,3 it looks like Apple won’t be doing the numbering on iOS devices (though it never did with the iPod touch).Burberry iPhone 4 Cases|Burberry iPhone 4S Cases|Hermes iPhone 4 Cases|Hermes iPhone 4S Cases

So that tip –That the next iPhone is simply the new “iPhone” – seems a lot more plausible now.

iPhoto maps may be a preview of Apple’s own mapping service

It has become clear that Apple’s new iPhoto App is pulling mapping  tiles from Apple’s own mapping services. Take this tile for instance. While they aren’t particularly good looking, Apple is no longer using third party mapping services like Google’s which iPhoto has used in the past and Apple has generally relied on for its mapping information across all of its applications, both Mac and iOS.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases

As Apple and Google continue to distance themselves from each other, Apple is clearly moving to bring its mapping needs in-house.

In fact, we’ve heard from a source within Google that Apple has NOT re-upped their mapping contract for 2013 and their current mapping contract ends toward the end of this year.  That means Apple could be moving all of its mapping data to this new format by the end of the year.

Apple last renewed its Google Maps contract in May of 2011.Coach iPhone 4 Case |Coach iPhone 4S Case |Hello Kitty iPhone 4S Case|Hello Kitty iPhone 4 Case

Apple has acquired three different mapping startups including Placebase,  C3 and Poly9 from which it is likely building its mapping services.  If you’ve seen what C3 can do, (videos below) you know that the above tile fits into the “you ain’t seen nothing yet” category.

LTE iPad pricing now live from Verizon and AT&T, current iOS devices on HSPA+ registering as “4G”

.

As the Apple Store tries to come back up we’re starting to get some details including pricing for 4G iPads. Both carriers match their 2GB and 5GB /month prices at $30 and $50 respectively.  AT&T offers an additional low end $15 250mb plan while Verizon has a monster 10GB for $80 plan.Designer iPhone 4 Case|Designer iPhone 4S Case

Update: We’re told that AT&T is actually offering 3GB for $30 – we’ve updated the graphic above.

On that note, you may be asking yourself which carrier to go on.  I’ve been testing AT&T and Verizon’s LTE for awhile now in NYC and AT&T’s is faster (probably because only a few Android users are using it so far).  However, that could change once the iPad hits the streets.  On the other hand, Verizon’s LTE network is more mature and available in many more cities currently.Coach iPhone 4 Case|Coach iPhone 4S Case

If you aren’t in LTE land, AT&T’s network is much speedier especially with the new iPad radios which allow for “faster than iPhone” 21Mbps.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

Speaking of faster iPhone, HSPA+ is now called “4G” on current iPhones.  Perhaps confusing, AT&T has been lobbying for this for months.Hermes iPhone 4 Case|Hermes iPhone 4S Case

Rumor: iPad 3 to employ a $70 to $80 price hike?

.

MacRumors points to a single Sina Weibo user who posted what is purported to be iPad 3 cost premiums over the iPad 2s now on the market (above). There is talk about Apple keeping its iPad 2s in circulation at a reduced cost, thereby making another tier of product. Motorola takes jab at Apple with Android Voice Actions vs. Siri comparison

Handset maker Motorola Mobility may have found itself in an uneasy place as both Microsoft and Apple are attempting to block its $12.billion sale to Google, but the company’s marketing department is as vigorous as ever. With this week’s spotlight on the latest mobile developments showcased at Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona, Spain, the Razr-maker published three provocative clips on its YouTube channel.Designer iPhone 4 Case|Designer iPhone 4S Case

The videos pit the iPhone 4S-exclusive Siri feature against Android Voice Actions running on three different handsets: The Atrix 2, Photon 4G and Electrify. In each instance, Siri runs notably slower (and therefore less useful) than Android Voice Actions on Motorola’s devices.

Both Android Voice Actions and Siri need a network connection to upload audio samples of spoken queries. The cloud does the rest–speech recognition, parsing your query and beaming down the results.Coach iPhone 4 Case|Coach iPhone 4S Case

Two more clips are right below.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

Android Voice Actions for calling, texting, navigation and more debuted in August 2010 and are supported on Android 2.2 onwards through the Voice Search app. Siri, Apple’s AI acquisition, is deeply integrated as a core iOS feature of iPhone 4S. As for hardware differences, Motorola launched the Photon 4G last summer and debuted it on the Sprint network as its first 4G device. A dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 chip from Nvidia powers it. Apple’s iPhone 4S was introduced on Oct. 4, 2011, and it runs the Apple-designed A5 chip packing in two processing Cortex-A9 cores clocked at an estimated 800MHz each. Apple licensed these cores from fables semiconductor maker ARM Holdings based in the United Kingdom— same as Nvidia with its Tegra 2 chip found inside Motorola’s device.

HowTo: Throttle AT&T for throttling your ‘unlimited’ data in 5 steps

By popular demand, MacTech provides a primer on taking AT&T to small claims court provided by attorney Bradley Sniderman.  Recently a plaintiff in Los Angeles CA won a $850 settlement and per AT&T’s EULA, class action lawsuits are not possible so this might be your only means of exacting revenge on your limited unlimited plans.  Excerpted:Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases

1) Where to file — most lawsuits, even those from small claims, need to be filed in the jurisdiction where the defendant can be found. In this case (and let’s use AT&T), AT&T may have corporate offices in only a few locations, but since they are a nationwide phone company, they are usually subject to jurisdiction anywhere. What this means is that you can file your small claims suit in the courthouse most convenient to you.

2) Make sure you have a copy of your contract, and please review the entire agreement. It may be a slow read, but you need to know the terms of it. You may be able to use these terms to show that AT&T does not have the right to slow your data speed.Designer iPad 2 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPad 2 Case

3) You need to be able to show that you have an unlimited data plan, which means you are entitled to unlimited data. You need to also show proof that AT&T had limited your data streaming. You next have to argue that AT&T has no right to charge you a fee for unlimited data, and then not supply it. It is not your fault that AT&T can’t keep up with demand for data. If you can even show that you are using less data that some of the fixed rate plans, such as the 3 gigabyte plans, that is even better (fixed plans using more data than you use, but they are not being throttled back). Make sure you have been paying your bill on time and that you are not late, since that could be used against you.Chanel iPad 2 Case|Gucci iPad 2 Case

4) Make sure you have an amount for damages. You need to show how you were damaged by not having data streaming. This could be by showing lost business opportunities or showing how much you have paid for the service you never got.

5) Be polite, and make sure you are prepared. The court will listen to you, but if you don’t know what you are talking about, then your argument gets lost.

Read the whole thing here if you are planning to do this. Perhaps if enough people take AT&T to court, they will raise, and/or perhaps publish, their throttling speeds to something usable.

Report: Apple working on high-fidelity iTunes audio with adaptive streaming

The Guardian reports that Apple is working on a new high-definition audio format to adapt to bandwidth or hardware capabilities. Presumably, Apple will leverage the new format to distribute high-fidelity music through iTunes and perhaps upgrade the iTunes Match service that currently provides matched songs in 256Kbps AAC format.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases

It is believed the new audio format would intelligently adjust itself to the bandwidth and storage available on the receiving device. Such a description also gives hope that an iTunes music streaming service, which is akin to Spotify and based on Apple’s Lala acquisition, could be in the works.

According to “a source with inside knowledge of the process,” the Cupertino, Calif.-based company is working with a London studio to prep existing audio files for the new format. An anonymous source told the paper:Coach iPhone 4 Case |Coach iPhone 4S Case

All of a sudden, all your audio from iTunes is in HD rather than AAC. Users wouldn’t have to touch a thing – their library will improve in an instant.

Apple’s annual iPod refresh that usually takes place in fall could be a fitting venue to announce the new high-fidelity format. Another possibility is the forthcoming iPad 3 event rumored to take place March 7.Hello Kitty iPhone 4S Case|Hello Kitty iPhone 4 Case

You will remember that Apple recently rolled outiTunes Match in Japan and enabled the newMastered for iTunes section in the iTunes Store populated with albums “specially tuned for higher fidelity sound.” Ars Technica explained in its trademark exhaustive style that “higher-fidelity sound” means 96kHz audio samples in 24-bit precision—a huge improvement in sound quality compared to CDs containing digital audio mixed down to 16-bit precision and sampled at 44.1KHz.According to Apple, keeping highest-quality masters on iTunes servers is a bulletproof way of improving audio quality on iTunes as soon as technology and Internet bandwidth catch up. Eagle-eyed readers could also point to a Neil Young interviewrevealing Steve Jobs was working on a high-fidelity music service because he wanted to bring the richness of the vinyl sound to digital tracks.

Sources: New Apple TV launching in March, near-immediate availability hinted for new iPads

iPads and Apple TVs work together for innovative AirPlay features

Reliable sources familiar with Apple’s upcoming product release have said that the company is in fact launching a new Apple TV alongside the next-generation iPad. We initially reported that Apple would be releasing two major new products in early March, and then believed the product would be a new Apple TV due to mounting code-based evidence for such a product with simultaneous supply constraints. Now, sources have outright said Apple is launching this J33 (the new Apple TV’s codename) alongside the new iPad.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

The new Apple TV is rumored to include a faster processor, possibly a variation of the dual-core A5 chip. The dual-core A5 chip has been said to be required for the Apple TV to finally stream 1080p quality video, but Apple is also working on an “A5X” chip that is dual-core, which also includes an improved graphics engine. Those two components of the chip would likely deliver the smooth video playback that Apple would include in such a product. Other possibilities from the rumor-mill include a redesigned Bluetooth 4.0 remote control, and Siri support, but those are not rumors that we can independently confirm (yet). This new Apple TV would seemingly launch with a new 1080P movie service from Apple’s iTunes Store. Read on for more…Burberry iPhone 4 Cases|Burberry iPhone 4S Cases

Sources are also saying that Apple will in fact launch at least three next-generation iPad variants in March. These sources backup our previous reports and say these new iPads are called J1, J2, and J2a internally. The J1 and J2 code names have long been tied to Retina Display iPad reports from Asia, so these code names add another layer of confirmation to new the iPad carrying a Retina Display. In our report on a number of next-generation iPad-related rumors, we noted that pre-sales would begin on March 7th (likely event day) or just a few days later. Sources are now saying that next-generation iPad shipments are already landing at ports of multiple countries around the world, so expect near-immediate availability. That does not mean you can buy one on event day, but likely within one to two weeks after the announcement.

This J1 iPad is likely the WiFI-only model, and the J2 and J2a are likely different cellular-data-enabled versions. GSM/CDMA/LTE have all been rumored cellular-date types for the new iPad, so those two J2 models are likely some technical combination of the three.Hermes iPhone 4 Cases|Hermes iPhone 4S Cases

Interestingly we’re hearing whispers that the J1 may only come in one color – at least at launch. iPads currently ship in either black and white, so this seems very strange to us. There will also be three capacities of each model, but we can’t  be sure of the sizes. iPads currently come in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities, but with Apple recently bumping the iPhone to 64GB for the first time (just last year), it wouldn’t be a stretch to see Apple move to a high end 128GB offering for their tablets.

We’re also hearing of a mystery accessory that will launch alongside the new iPads and Apple TV. We’re not sure what it is, but it’s called “B82″ internally. The product is likely some accessory, probably ranging from either a cable, cover, or new audio remote. The new Apple TV will include Bluetooth 4.0 capability, so perhaps Apple will ship an improved remote to that takes advantage of that next-generation Bluetooth protocol. We’ve got part numbers for all of these new products below. Thanks, Mr. X!

Apple unveiling iPad 3 next Wednesday in San Francisco

The Verge just reported that they received an invite from Apple for an iPad 3 introduction to be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10am PST, on Wednesday, March 7. The news just rendered CNBC’s report obsolete and inaccurate as it called for a March unveiling of a quad-core iPad 3 in New York City. True to Apple’s trademark anticipation-rising style, the invitation graphics shows a closeup of an iPad display adorned with the tagline “We have something you really have to see. And touch.” (Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases)The invite graphics would appear to confirm long-standing rumors of an ultra high-resolution Retina Display (2048-by-1536 pixels) expected as the key selling point of the device. Digital caliper comparison suggests 0.81mm thicker iPad 3

(note the misplaced decimal above)

Apple.pro recently leaked spyshots of the purported iPad 3 front glass and a next-generation iPod nano with a camera on the back. Today, the Chinese blog is back at it again, pointing to an image depicting the thickness of the third-generation iPad’s shell compared to the current-generation iPad 2. Resorting to a good ol’ digital caliper, the photograph reveals iPad 3 to be 9.50mm thick. Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

Compare this to iPad 2′s depth of 8.8mm (the original iPad is 13.4mm) and the third-generation iPad could in fact end up being a hair thicker than its predecessor. Or, if we’re really nitpicking, 0.81mm thicker. It would seem there’s some merit to that talk of a slightly thicker iPad 3 with more tapering and narrower bezel. Apple is likely to unveil iPad 3 at a media event next Wednesday, March 7.Chanel iPhone 4 Cases|Chanel iPhone 4S Cases|Chanel iPhone 4 Case|Chanel iPhone 4S Case

According to sources who spoke with 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman, at least three next-generation iPads are to be expected. It’s been speculated iPad 3 will run a dual-core A5X chip with an improved graphics engine. This chip is said to be an evolution of iPad 2′s A5 processor rather than a major upgrade the rumored quad-core A6 silicon is expected to be. Near-immediate availability is being mulled for iPad 3 as shipments have been spotted already landing at ports of multiple countries around the world.

As for the purported digital caliper comparison photo, it’s worth pointing out that Apple.pro has been a pretty reliable source for Apple hardware rumors in the past. That said, you should keep in mind their article and observations are based on someone’s Photobucket upload so it would be wise to apply a few pinches of salt to this little news nugget.

CNBC thinks Apple is moving quad-core iPad 3 launch to NYC

A tweet by CNBC currently circulating around has generated quite a stir amongst the Apple community, claiming that Apple is launching quad-core (we’re hearing enhanced dual-core) iPad 3 next month (they got the timeframe right) at a media event apparently held in New York City.

The tweet, attributed to “sources”, reads:Designer iPhone 4 Cases|Designer iPhone 4S Cases|Designer iPhone 4 Case|Designer iPhone 4S Case

Even though Apple launched iBooks Author, iTunes U and iBooks 2 with Textbooks at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, it would be out of character for them to hold such a high-profile product launch on the East Coast instead of the Cupertino campus or San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where they launched both the original iPad and iPad 2.

CNBC offered no new news here and their video report (included above) simply reaffirms Bloomberg’s January report asserting iPad 3 will support fourth-generation Long-Term Evolution cellular connectivity.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Case|Louis Vuitton iPhone 4S Case

The iPad 3 launch in New York City doesn’t seem to fly with anyone and The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple tweeted that CNBC is wrong, specifically claiming “It won’t be in NY”. Dalrymple has a proven track record and is known for debunking incorrect claims. He previously dismissed February iPad 3 launch claims and first reported on Apple’s Let’s talk iPhone event

Actual iPad 3 production display placed under microscope, Retina Display confirmed

Macrumors claimed to have obtained one of the screens floating around on the Internet from iPad 3 production. Putting it under a microscope, the publication indeed discovered it has 4 times the pixels as an iPad 2 or double the horizontal and double the vertical, which yields 2,048-by-1,536 pixels.Hermes iPhone 4 Case|Hermes iPhone 4S Case|Chanel iPhone 4 Case|Chanel iPhone 4S Case

Physically, the purported iPad 3 display is the same size as the current iPad 1 and iPad 2 display at 9.7″ in diagonal, and looks quite similar to the naked eye.

However, when comparing the iPad 3 display to one from an iPad 2 under a microscope, the difference in resolutions becomes readily apparent, with the iPad 3 display’s pixels appearing to be one-quarter the size of those on the iPad 2.

We are just a few weeks away from the anticipated March 7 announcement. While the Retina display was expected for some time, there might still be some surprises.
