Mark Zuckerberg Discusses Steve Jobs' Influence on Facebook Designer iPhone 4 Cases

Much has been made of the apparently tense relationship between Apple Designer iPhone 4 Cases and Facebook, sparked in large part by the spat over Facebook integration in Apple's Ping social networking service last year. According to one report, the companies have also faced over such topics as Apple's desire for systemwide Facebook integration in iOS 4 and Facebook's plans for tablet platforms.

But in a new interview with Charlie Rose set to air on Designer iPhone 4 Cases  tonight, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg reveals (transcript from AllThingsD) how he was mentored by Steve Jobs, who advised Zuckerberg about building high-quality teams and maintaining a sharp focus on Facebook's products.

Mark Zuckerberg: Oh, I don¡¯t know. I mean, he ¡ª he¡¯s amazing. He was amazing. I mean, he ¡ª I had a lot of questions for him on ¨C

Charlie Rose: Like what?

Mark Zuckerberg: How to build a team around you, right, that¡¯s focused on building as high quality and good things as you are. How to keep an organization focused, right, when I think the tendency for larger companies is to try to fray and go into all these different areas. Yeah, I mean a lot just on the aesthetics and kind of mission orientation of companies. I mean, Apple is a company that is so focused on just building products that ¡ª for their customers and their users. And ¡ª and that¡¯s like ¡ª it¡¯s such a deep part of their mission is build these beautiful products for their users. And I think we connected a lot on this level of, okay, Facebook has this mission that¡¯s really more than just trying to build a company, right, that has a market cap or a value. It¡¯s like we¡¯re trying to do this thing in the world. And I don¡¯t know, a lot of it I just think we connected on that level.

Apple is of course famous for its laser-like focus on a relatively small number of products, offering greater clarity to customers and users while also ensuring that the company's employees do not become spread too thin or stray too far from the overall objectives.

In the wake of Steve Jobs' passing, the extent to which he served as a mentor to other high-profile industry personalities has become more clear, as evidenced by an on again-off again relationship with Google executives Larry Page and Sergey Brin and a connection with Salesforce.com founder Marc Benioff that ultimately resulted in Benioff giving Jobs and Apple the "Designer iPhone 4 Cases  Store" trademark and URL free of charge out of gratitude.

Jobs' advice to Zuckerberg parallels some of the advice he gave to Page, shared in Walter Isaacon's biography of Jobs, in which he told Page to figure out what five things Google wanted to focus on "when it grows up". Seeing Google straying dangerously toward a bloated array of apps and services, Jobs warned Page about the possibility of turning into the next Microsoft, with an assortment of peripheral products dragging the company away from its core areas of focus and expertise.

Apple makes up its mind: iPad 3 displays to be supplied by LG Display, Samsung and Sharp

Following an enduring period of quality-testing and trial runs, Apple has finally chosen not one, not two, but three suppliers of LCD panels for iPad 3. The winners are LG Display, Samsung Electronics and Sharp who all apparently cut deals to supply LCD panels for the third-generation iPad, per DigiTimes story from this morning. LG Display will act as the leading supplier, while¡°Sharp stands a chance of overtaking the Korea competitor if it is able to run stable supplies of quality panels¡±. Surprised that Samsung, a major supplier in the past, fell out of favor a bit? Don¡¯t be.

Apple has apparently been quality-testing iPad 3 displays from Samsung and LG for some time. The company will entrust backlight modules to Taiwan-based Radiant Opto-Electronics, which also provided those units for previous-generation iPads. Radiant will ship their backlight modules to LG Display, Samsung Electronics and Sharp:Louis Vuitton iPad 2 Cases|Chanel iPad 2 Cases|Gucci iPad 2 Cases

Radiant accounts for over half of the backlight units LG Display needs for its iPad 3 panels, while Samsung sources backlight units from the Taiwan maker for all its iPad 3 panels, the sources said. Sharp also uses backlight modules from Radiant for iPad 3 panels, as well as from a Japan-based BLU supplier, the sources added.

The report makes no mention of iPad 3¡äs resolution. The blogosphere has been calling for four times more pixels compared to the iPad¡¯s 1024-by-768 pixel display. This means an ultra high-resolution 9.7-inch display with a 2048-by-1536 pixel resolution that Apple would want to market as being Retina-capable.

Big media like the Wall Street Journal have jumped on the bandwagon, with the paper running a reportearlier this month that Retina Display iPad 3 will ship early 2012, not late 2011 as originally predicted. The report does confirm an earlier story claiming Apple scrapped plans for Retina Display iPad 3 this year due to issues associated with volume production of such a high density screen. The company has been reportedly quality-testing 2048-by-1536 displays for iPad 3 from LG and Samsung.DigiTimes previously asserted Apple had to delay Retina Display iPad 3 due to issues with volume production of such a high density screen.

Apple ranks #1 in U.S. retail sales per square foot

Apple officially ranks number one in retail sales per square foot, according to a new studypublished by retail analysis firm RetailSails that analyzed 160+ top U.S.-based retailers. As you can see from the graphic above (full graphic below), Apple is almost two times ahead of their closest competitor (Tiffany & Co), and almost five times ahead of the closest technology related retailer (GameStop). What’s most impressive is the fact Apple has much less experience in retail (ten yearsas of May) than most of other retailers included in the study.Best iPhone 4 Cases|Best iPhone 5 Cases|iPhone 5 Cases|Designer iPhone 5 Cases

Apple has been on a roll lately opening new retail shops in the US, UK, Spain, and then three moreslated to open in Charlotte, Little Rock, and Paris this weekend. This is all part of a massive retail expansion which recently lead the company to become the nation’s fastest growing retailer, according to USA Today. Apple retail stores in the U.S. grew nearly 80% from the year prior with U.S. retail sales increasing $4.6 billion during the first quarter of 2011.

According to USAToday:Designer iPhone 4 Cases

That increase accounted for one-fifth of all sales growth by publicly traded retailers in the U.S., according to a recent analysis of sales trends by retail sales expert David Berman.

Keep in mind these numbers are only for the US. Apple is rapidly expanding abroad as well with a possible shop in Russia, and other stores popping up all over the EU, many of which make up the thirty new stores the company plans on opening by September of this year. Another victim of iPad success: Amid losses, Aces says breaking even in 2011 ¡°becomes impossible¡±

Acer’s seven-inch Iconia Tab A100 tablet, which hit US shores earlier this month

Sixteen months following the original iPad launch back in April 2010, the Android camp hit unexpected roadblocks as first tablets built around Google’s Honeycomb software fail to impress the mass consumer or gain significant market traction. Meanwhile, heads rolled at gadget makers that couldn’t product a viable answer to Apple’s market-defining product and nasty quotes from jealous competitors didn’t exactly help either. Computer maker Acer is a typical example. Their former CEO and president Gianfranco Lanci was forced to quit his post abruptly earlier this year in the wake of the iPad challenge as the company announced reorganization.Best iPhone 4 Cases|Best iPhone 5 Cases

Today, the Acer Group posted preliminary results and the numbers don’t look good. The Acer Group suffered a quarterly operating loss of NT$7.1 billion (about $246 million) – their first-ever quarter loss – and a 32 percent annual drop in consolidated revenues that topped NT$102.1 billion, or about $3.5 billion. Three hundred jobs will be cut in Europe and the company will take a %150 million hit to write off inventory and doubtful payments in Europe. Acer shares fell a whopping 65 percent this year in a broader market down 16.4 percent. Also, they have no compelling products in sight in the run-up to the holiday quarter. It gets worse, chairman JT Wang toldGuardian:iPhone5 Cases

Today I have to say, trying to break even this year becomes impossible.

Why poor results? Acer apparently swallowed significant costs attributed to company-wide reorganization amid the iPad threat and clearing up excessive inventory. As 9to5Mac explained, other Android backers are now forced to discount their unsold products sharply in order to “digest inventory overstock”. Interestingly, the firm will no longer report sell-in, which only includes shipments to the channel, and will instead switch to the sell-through model, that actually counts sales to end users.iPhone4 Cases

This is what the post-PC world ranking looks like today, if you count tablets as PCs

The discrepancy between shipments and actual sales was glaringly evident when Samsung vice president Lee Young-hee in January praised the two million units sell-in of their inaugural tablet, the seven-inch Galaxy Tab, but later admitted to seeing a much smaller sell-through. Too many market surveys also fail to make a distinction between sell-in and sell-through. As a result, some surveys paint a rosy picture of Android-driven tablets accounting for as much as one third of all of the tablets sold. This led to a favorite Silicon Valley joke, first coined by Instapaper’s Marco Armenti, that there is no tablet market, only an iPad market, even though some beg to differ.

Apple’s tablet did nuke netbooks from orbit, a market where Acer thrived. Meanwhile in tablets, Acer’s Eee Transformer Pad – even though a compelling and indeed an interesting product – failed to make a dent. Acer is also late to bring the Iconia Tab, another interesting product, to market. This seven-inch Honeycomb tablet hit US shores earlier this month as Apple gears up to launch the third-generation iPad. Acer is not the only PC maker feeling the heat in the post-PC world. The tech world was shocked when Google announced intentions to purchase Motorola Mobility’s money-losing business for $12.5 billion and last week brought more unexpected news when the world’s leading computer maker Hewlett-Packard quit hardware business.

This has left Dell and Apple as the only American computer makers. Situation is about to get worse as HP unloads its computer inventory in another fire-sale maneuver that is likely to fierce PC price competition in the Christmas quarter. This could have far-reaching consequences due to the razor-sharp margin nature of the low-cost, high-volume PC biz. Apple is a notable exception as the owns the lucrative $1,000+ segment of the market. In the June quarter, Apple grew Mac sales 14.6 percent worldwide versus the industry average of 2.7 percent, marking the 21st consecutive quarter in which Mac shipments growth outpaced the entire PC market. Rumors are also swirling thatSamsung could acquire HP’s computer business in an effort to become the world’s leading PC maker.Louis Vuitton iPhone 4 Cases|Chanel iPhone 4 Cases|Gucci iPhone 4 cases

WSJ: Sprint to carry iPhone 5 at same time as AT&T and Verizon

We¡¯d originally heard that Sprint was getting iPhone engineers ready in their Kansas City headquarters in May and heard directly that they were ramping for the iPhone in June.  Today theWall St. Journal is reporting that Sprint will carry the iPhone 5 along with AT&T and Verizon in the US.  The nation¡¯s third largest carrier has been struggling of late and the addition of the iconic device on TRULY unlimited plans would certainly be a differentiator.iPhone4 Cases|iPhone5 Cases

Sprint Nextel Corp. will begin selling the iPhone 5 in mid-October, people familiar with the matter said, closing a huge hole in the No. 3 U.S. carrier¡¯s lineup and giving Apple Inc. another channel for selling its popular phone.

The timing, however, indicates Apple¡¯s new iPhone will hit the market later than expected and too late to contribute to sales in the company¡¯s fiscal fourth quarter, which ends in September. Most observers had expected the device to arrive next month.

Top U.S. carrier Verizon Wireless and No. 2 AT&T Inc. will begin selling the phone in mid-October as well, two of the people said. Sprint had more than 52 million subscribers at the end of the second quarter, compared with 106 million for Verizon and nearly 99 million for AT&T.

Sprint will also carry the iPhone 4, starting at the same time, one person familiar with the situation said.  There has been some question previously whether the Sprint iPhone will be launched simultaneous to AT&T and Verizon.  A Sprint forum member last month was able to get the same information as the Wall St. Journal but questioned the release timing.

Additionally, Sprint subsidiary Virgin Mobile has been refiguring its plans for throttling in early October, perhaps signalling that the iPhone may make its first US pre-paid appearance.Best iPhone 4 Cases|Best iPhone 5 Cases

Apple¡¯s 5th Ave. Store evacuated due to earthquake [Image]

customers and employees waiting for the Fifth Avenue Store to re-open

You might have heard there was a little trembler on the east coast earlier today.  Perhaps due to the renovation of the glass cube overhead, we’re hearing that the whole 5th Avenue Store was evacuated and both customers and employees were relocated to Central Park while the structure was checked for damages (above).

Better safe than sorry.Best iPhone 4 Cases|Best iPhone 5 Cases|iPhone Five Cases|iPhone 5 Screen Protector

Samsung¡¯s prior art argument against iPad design: Stanley Kubrick¡¯s ¡°2001: A Space Odyssey¡±

You may have heard about “prior art”. In patent law, prior art is basically all information made available publicly before a date which might be relevant to a patent’s claims of originality. Hence, if any invention can be described in prior art, its patent can be invalidated. Samsung is resorting to some pretty sci-fi (literally!) arguments in its legal spat with the Cupertino gadget maker, having gone as far as citing Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” movie as prior art against Apple’s tablet.Best iPhone 4 Cases|Best iPhone 5 Cases|Louis Vuitton iPhone 5 Cases

The finding, discovered by intellectual property expert Florian Mueller on his blog FOSS Patents, stems from page two of an exhibit Samsung filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The document reads:

Attached hereto as Exhibit D is a true and correct copy of a still image taken from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey”. In a clip from that film lasting about one minute, two astronauts are eating and at the same time using personal tablet computers. The clip can be downloaded ****** at . As with the design claimed by the D’889 Patent, the tablet disclosed in the clip has an overall rectangular shape with a dominant display screen, narrow borders, a predominately flat front surface, a flat back surface (which is evident because the tablets are lying flat on the table’s surface), and a thin form factor.

Gucci iPhone 5 Cases|Chanel iPhone 5 Cases|iPad 2 Cases

The prior art claim is in Samsung’s defense against Apple’s motion for a preliminary injunction. Samsung must be pretty desperate if they’re resorting to such childish tactics. Color us blue, but this one tops Samsung’s claim in a Dutch court that Apple doctored Galaxy smartphone images.

Go past the break for the said YouTube clip from “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Now, I’m no lawyer but Samsung would probably be better served to use their own prior art, perhaps something likethis Photoframe from 2006. What do you think?
