10 Key Points on Training the Aging Workforce9/23/2011

Will baby boomers retire at 60? Will there be a massive employee shortage in a few years? What can companies and government agencies do? This is a very important topic, given demographic trends worldwide. Let me provide an overview with these 10 points.

1) The Conference Board published a good report in 2005 titled America's Aging Workforce Posing New Opportunities and Challenges. Quotes:

"Some 64 million baby boomers (over 40 percent of the U.S. labor force) are poised to retire in large numbers by the end of this decade. In industries already facing labor and skills shortages, forward-thinking companies are recruiting, retaining, and developing flexible work-time arrangements and/or phased retirement plans for these workers (55 years of age or older), many of whom have skills that are difficult to replace. Such actions are putting these companies ahead of competitors who view the aging workforce largely as a burden putting strains on pension plans and healthcare costs."

"More older workers want to remain in their jobs for both personal fulfillment and financial reasons. In a related forthcoming study from The Conference Board, more than half (55 percent) of older employees surveyed said they were not planning to retire because they find their jobs interesting. Significantly, 74 percent also cited not having sufficient financial resources as a reason they were continuing to work, and 60 percent cited the need for medical benefits."

Not only in the US: the largest single group within the UK workforce in 2006 was comprised of people between 45 and 59.

2) Some consulting companies like Accenture seem to be betting that the solution will be to improve technology for knowledge transfer and train younger employees as soon as possible.

3) And the market for Talent Management and Succession Planning solutions such as Taleo (whose VP of Research led us to some of these reports) has been growing steadily, and has more room to grow.

4) Preparing for an Aging Workforce: A Focus on New York Businesses, is a survey of 400 HR managers sponsored by AARP. One interesting tidbit I found in the report: when asked about "Strategies to help employees work past traditional retirement age", the top answer was "Training to Upgrade Skills (out of 8 such as "easing into the retirement" or "working part-time").

5) In the Talent-Shortage Myth article, Workforce Management editor John Hollon he tries to debunk the myth of a massive, simultaneous worker shortage, highlighting that many baby boomers will want to remain in the workforce for many more years.

6) Many people are asking "Does your organization have-or need-a baby boomer exit strategy?"

7) Companies need a comprehensive strategy, more than a baby boomer "exit" strategy: hiring and training younger employees, ensure knowledge transfer, manage talent and sucession planning, AND training baby boomers who want to stay. I tend to agree with John Hollon that there won't be a massive shortage. Many baby boomers will want to, and need to, keep working. But it will be important for sectors like government, communications, energy, utilities, to manage their worforce of people over 50 and ensure flexible and appropriate workplace arrangements, and start planning now for those arrangement

10 Benefits of Drinking Water9/23/2011

I saw a video on You Tube that said we need to drink at least half our body weight in fluid ounces. So if you weigh 200 pounds, then you need to drink at least 100 fluid ounces every day. I would buy gallon jugs of water, but I rarely drank the whole gallon in a day. I noticed that the small bottles of water were measure in 16.9 fluid ounces. This was easy to measure.

I started to buy 24 packs of 16.9 ounce bottles of water. I made a goal to drink 10 bottles a day. I only weighed 190 pounds at that time but I knew that since I had severely dry skin then I probably needed to drink much more water than one half my body weight in fluid ounces. I probably drink an average of about eight 16.9 fluid ounce bottles of water each day. Since I started paying attention to the amount of water that I drink I noticed several things within only two weeks.

- The cracked, flaky skin on my legs started to clear up.

- The discoloration around my wrists disappeared completely. (The skin around my wrists had be extra dry and discolored for years.)

- My urine was either clear or light yellow (It was normally dark yellow.)

- The hard calloused skin on my feet started to soften up.

- I am more regular.

- I noticed a dramatic difference in my sexual performance. (There is nothing more devastating to the 30 something male self-esteem than the inability to "get it up.")

- I lost about 10 pounds of fat. (I was not trying to lose weight, but I am more ripped than I have ever been in my life!)

Those are just the things that I immediately noticed. I was so blown away that I looked up some of the other benefits of drinking water. Here are 10 benefits of drinking water.

1. Drinking water is good for fat loss. Water flushes out the by-product (waste) of fat breakdown. When there is not enough water to do this job the liver compensates, which diverts the livers attention from its more important job of burning fat. Also you will naturally eat less when you drink more water.

2. Drinking water is good for preventing certain ailments. Some ailments such as fatigue, headaches, muscle spasms, and back pain are caused by dehydration.

3. Drinking water can help you to look younger- What? Yes, water is the mythical fountain of youth. Water flushes toxins out of the skin. When you are properly hydrated your skin and muscles are more full and radiant. If you are not drinking enough water you may start to look more and more like Skeletor.

4. Drinking water is good for sexual performance. Yes it is true. Your pride and joy, the love muscle, is mostly comprised of water when it is at its peak performance.

5. Water is good for cleansing and detoxing. Spending tons of money on detoxing solutions without drinking lots of water is defeating the purpose, and may do more harm than good.

6. Drinking water reduces the risk of disease- cancer, heart attack

7. Drinking water helps you to recover from injuries quicker.

8. Drinking water will help to boost your immune system and mental acuity.

9. Drinking water increases energy and alertness

10. Drinking water cushions joints and muscles.

If 75% of your body is water and roughly 90% of your brain, doesn't it make sense to drink plenty of water? Drinking more water is just one thing you c

10 Reasons Not to Spam9/23/2011

Just because every second a company out there is filling others' mailboxes with spam doesn't give you the license to do the same! Here we give you 10 reasons why you should not spam.

First, you'll be abused and hated. People don't like getting spam, and while some business owners can be thick-skinned and take insults, why should you deal with a torrent of abuse? It's quite unnerving, so don't spam - that way you won't have to deal with any of this.

Secondly, you may be met with technological retaliation - if you spam, your mail server, your website, or even your ISP could be shut down. Some tech-savvy geeks could even play around with your phone service and fax service, cutting down your communication.

Third, spamming is just unethical - you're taking a free ride at somebody else's expense, unlike direct mail and radio, you're not paying any costs. When you're spamming, you're just stealing somebody else's computing resources.

Fourth, you are going against your ISP policies - because spamming isn't allowed. If your ISP discovers you're spamming, chances are they would not only restrict or shut down your access to the Internet but also delete your website.

Fifth, there are legal problems involved - since you are in effect hijacking someone else's resources, you could find yourself in a legal battle for abusing an ISP's network. Plus, there are now many anti-spamming laws which could land you in trouble if you are spamming!

Sixth, you are damaging your own company's reputation - because everyone hates unwanted commercial email. This translates into damaging publicity.

Seventh, you are antagonizing your potential users.

Eighth, there is always a danger that you may get ripped off.

Ninth, there's nothing quite like permission-based marketing - use ethical email strategies and you will be surprised by how much they work! Use ethical emails to proactively reach out.

Tenth, spamming at the very basic level doesn't work - no successful Internet business out there has gotten to the top through spamming.

0845 Numbers In - 0800 Numbers Out?9/23/2011

The popularity of 0845 numbers is outstripping Free Phone 0800 numbers. Recent search engine statistics for February 2008 show that online purchases of 0845 numbers outweighed 0800 numbers by a factor of 3 to 1.

In recent years 0800 has been seen to be the way to go. Business people have known that they can attract potential customers with the lure of a free phone call so why this change in trend from 0800 to 0845?

A major advantage of 0845 numbers is that they offer one fixed annual cost to business owners. This is because business owners do not pay to receive calls on their 0845 numbers. Typically you will pay a modest set up fee to purchase an 0800 number plus an annual fee and that's it - no nasty surprises.

This isn't the case with 0800 numbers as businesses pay typically anywhere between 3p and 6p per minute to receive calls made on their 0800 numbers as well as a set up fee and monthly rental. If call traffic is high on an 0800 number then the monthly bills for call charges can rapidly rise to an unacceptable level. This can make the cost per enquiry much too high.

0800 numbers can be open to fraudulent use by employees and their families as well as salespeople. If your employee's wife finds out that she can ring her husband at work for free by using the company's 0800 number there is not a great deal anyone can do about it. There is no great incentive for your employees and their families to use an 0845 number to ring up work as they realise that they have to pay for the call just as if they had dialled the landline number.

A common tactic for telesales people is to go through a Yellow Pages, BT Phone Book or Thomson directory and just dial business that display 0800 numbers in their adverts. Obviously this practice greatly reduces telesales costs but can be incredibly frustrating for businesses who continually receive telephone solicitations on their 0800 number. 0845 numbers come into their own again as telesales people would simply not make the effort to just ring 0845 numbers as they understand there is a cost element to the call.

In many ways the increased popularity of 0845 numbers is a self fulfilling prophecy. The more 0845 numbers that are purchased the more they appear in adverts - the more they appear in adverts the more the public accepts and understands them. Try conducting a straw poll at your office by asking your colleagues what it costs to call 0800 numbers and 0845 numbers. Most people understand that 0845 calls cost the same as a local call so they do not represent a barrier.

Both 0800 and 0845 numbers give businesses the opportunity of a great monitoring and tracking service. The concept is simple - just put a unique number in each advert that you have and make sure that it doesn't appear anywhere else. Look at the itemised bill you receive from your telecoms provider every month and it should list the numbers of calls your advert receives. At a glance you will be able to see how well your adverts are performing.

So, if you are considering purchasing an 0800 or 0845 number you have some decisions to make as to which one you go for. 0845 is making massive strides on 0800 number yet 0800 is a double edged sword offering free calls to your customers but being open to potential abuse.
