It's all about control with

WIFE killer Malcolm Webster is suspected of being a serial fire-raiser, a former detective inspector who investigated the conman has said. The 52-year-old, who murdered his first wife in a car crash and tried to do the same to his second partner, has been linked to six fires which broke out when he was in the vicinity, it has been reported.Meanwhile, Felicity Drumm, the second wife who married Webster in 1997, has branded him a "psychopath".More details have emerged of Webster's bizarre fantasy world including claims that he was an army major working for the Special Forces in Saudi Arabia. Retired detective inspector Charles Henry, who led the investigation in Webster's Oban home, said it was strange so many fires happened on the killer's doorstep. He said: "Everywhere he went there appeared to be a fire. His cottage in Aberdeen got set on fire, the house that he and his second wife were going to buy was set on fire and there was a fire in his in-laws' house in New Zealand in 1998."In the late 1990s a fire tore through an Aberdeen storage unit destroying Webster's possessions.

He won ¡ê68,000 after threatening the insurers with legal action.Webster was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow last week of staging the death of his first wife, Claire Morris to look like an accident. The plot gained him ¡ê200,000 in insurance payouts. He then tried to repeat the fraud on Ms Drumm and began drugging her on their honeymoon and siphoning off her money from a joint bank account. Webster then tried to kill her in a deliberate car crash on 12 February, 1999, in a bid to obtain more than ¡ê 750,000 of insurance money.Yesterday Ms Drumm revealed that after she survived, Webster told her: "You would have died happy.""I felt physically sick," she said. "It was very clear to me then that I was lucky to be alive because everything just fell into place - the blackouts, the car accidents. "He planned everything. I loved him dearly but to him I meant nothing - I was just a means to an end."It's all about control with Malcolm. When he doesn't have that complete control, he goes into meltdown. I'm convinced that's why he drugged me repeatedly.

It was all about the power. I am sickened and repulsed by him now."He's a psychopath who lacks any sort of morality of social conscience."Webster was also convicted of trying to bigamously marry Simone Banarjee, 41, and lying to her that he had cancer. He even shaved off his hair and eyebrows as part of the lie.Charles Henry, who investigated Webster while he lived at Ms Banarjee's Oban home, said detectives found a full desert army uniform and ballistic helmet in the property. He said: "He hinted to Simone that he was a major in the Saudi Arabian army. While underground connection - Posted at 11:11 PM on 10/31/2011 by asss

While underground connection

They are one of the least-loved features of our countryside. But electricity pylons, which have barely changed since the 1920s, could be getting a makeover through a competition to rethink their design. This proposed design for Iceland's electricity transmission pylons came from American architect Choi + Shine, and shows giant, human-like structuresIn the contest, run by the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) for the Department of EnerADVERTISEMENTgy and Climate Change and National Grid, architects, designers and engineers are being urged to come up with new designs.Ministers and industry say new pylons and infrastructure will be needed across the UK as the equivalent of 20 new power stations are linked to the network, including renewable sources such as wind. National Grid said it would give "serious consideration" to developing the winning design for use in future projects.

But the competition comes too late to affect the latest addition to Scotland's network of pylons, with those forming the forthcoming Beauly to Denny line retaining the familiar 1920s lattice design. There are currently 88,000 electricity pylons in the UK, including about 800 of the biggest in Scotland. The 50-metre high steel lattice towers in the transmission network carry electricity for thousands of miles around the country. Their design - by architect Sir Reginald Blomfield in 1927 - makes them resistant to high winds and lightning strikes and able to cope with the load and tension of the cables.Nick Winser, National Grid's executive director UK, said: "Much of the new low-carbon generation is planned for remote or coastal areas, which means new infrastructure will be needed to get the electricity we need to our homes, businesses and vehicles."While underground connection will be a viable solution in some sensitive locations, new and replacement pylons will be needed, and National Grid is equally keen to support the development of the most visually acceptable overhead solutions."

He added: "The pylon as we know it has served the nation well, but new technologies and materials mean there may now be opportunities for new designs."Other countries have experimented with designs for pylons, but Iceland last year rejected plans to sculpt pylons into human-like lattice figures. Another of the contenders, architectural firm Arphenotype, had proposed more curving, "organic" shapes to carry electricity.Italy accepted futuristic designs resembling a plant stalk or tree splitting in two to hold power lines, while France built a similar set of pylons in the 1990s with two towers featuring curved tops. For Scotland's 137-mile line of pylons between Beauly and Denny, however, is it too late for a design change.

According to Kirk sources - Posted at 11:08 PM on 10/31/2011 by asss

According to Kirk sources

FOR those Kirk members who feel compelled to leave the Church following today's vote, the question of where they go is littered with potential problems, both theological and practical. If, as it would seem, it is more likely those in the traditionalist wing of the Church walk, then there are two options. The first is to splinter entirely and form themselves into an entirely new presbyterian church. Such an outcome would be simiADVERTISEMENTlar to that of the Disruption in 1843, when the Kirk split over the Church's relationship with the state, resulting in the formation of the Free Church of Scotland. During this split, the congregations that departed abandoned the church buildings that they had previously worshipped in. According to Kirk sources, though, it is thought that some departing congregations who have invested heavily in their own churches may try to retain their rights over the buildings.

Parties on both sides of the debate say that such a move would be both legally difficult and contentious, with some senior Kirk members stating that there is nothing in Church law that would allow them to do it. The second path would see members of the Kirk moving to the Free Church of Scotland, which holds a staunchly conservative view on homosexuality. According to one Kirk source, theological groundwork has already been done by the Free Church to ease the path for any new members. "The Church recently held a special assembly where they voted that they would sing hymns as well as psalms. "That's pretty interesting politically, because that would have been a deal breaker for some Kirk conservatives who may leave, but the Free Church taking that decision has created a potential home for those who may think of leaving the Church over this issue."

The source said he believed discussions had been going on "behind the scenes" about the possibility of a bloc seceding from the Kirk across to the Free Church. But even such a move is not problem-free, as the Free Church, as well as being conservative on homosexuality, is also traditionalist on the issue of women's ordination, and therefore some departing Kirk evangelicals would feel that they could not join a church that held this view. For those on the progressive wing of the Church, departing the Kirk is an even less attractive option. As both sides of the argument acknowledge, the number of liberals likely to leave is low but also there are few, if any, churches that they could go to in Scotland. Thus, as one Kirk source puts it, they are more likely to "grit their teeth and stay".
