The World observes April as Autism Awareness month. Let’s spare some time and think about this growing health care, educational, research and social challenge. As a CEO of Autism Intervention Delivery Technology Provider Company, I would like to share my views and concerns about use of technology in dealing with this challenge.
I believe that present autism spectrum disorder treatments are expensive due to under utilization of technology. There is no doubt that human touch and care in treating autism is important. So, the first stage of any autism intervention should be one on one. But, this should be reinforced by individualized, synchronized, closely monitored, documented, extended and supplemented use of IEP i.e. Individualized Education Plan driven technology for repetitions and reinforcement. The end result will be a successful and cost effective intense intervention.
When autism in children is growing with rapid rate… When autism has serious economic and social impacts…. When our education system is struggling with budget …… It is crucial that we do some thinking and try to answer these questions -
1. Are we prepared to serve more children with autism in the classroom? 2. Are we prepared to add more special education teachers? 3. Do we have sufficient number of trained teachers who can cater to the educational needs of children with autism?
Do we have enough resources and facilities to accommodate children on autism spectrum whose numbers are increasing with alarming rate?
Do we know when and where the autism population growth stops? CDC Statistics show that there has been a staggering 57 percent increase from 2002 to 2006, and a 600 percent increase in just the past 20 years.
Do we have sufficient resources in terms of experts and skilled personnel who can draw comprehensive education plan for affected individual?
Are all people related to and involved in the growth of affected individual well connected? Is it really easy to provide autism education to parents for the effective intervention at home?
Well, with budget and resource constraints and phenomenal increase in autism population, the answer to almost all might be in negative.
But, there is always a hope. Make intense use of technology in early stages of autism. Use Technology in a way that efforts of all involved - educators, parents, therapist and analysts and the individual with autism are synchronized. . Technology makes Intervention more – affordable and integrated. Technology has the ability to manage a challenge of such magnitude with less resources. It is the technology which can keep all those involved in the development of an individual, connected. The flexibility, individuality, research, analysis and monitoring needed for drawing and executing special education plan can be effectively provided by integrated use of intervention technology.
To conclude, early, intense and integrated use of Technology can ease the pressure on all stakeholders as well as the resources. It is our hope against challenge of such magnitude, and, to help people with autism lead an independent life. For more information visit http://www.shanesh.com/
