6/12/2011 - James and Wade Smile, Whatever the World Thinks |
| Sometimes they smirked and sometimes they paused excessively, the nonverbal cues revealing everything about LeBron James and Dwyane Wade and their weary amusement with a season of perpetual scrutiny.
Nine hours before Game 6 of the N.B.A. finals,Monster Energy Caps James and Wade sat on a podium and addressed the usual topics: James¡¯s struggles, Wade¡¯s health and the burdens of being, seemingly, the most despised team in the league.
¡°That¡¯s the world we live in,¡± Wade said Sunday after the Miami Heat¡¯s morning shootaround. ¡°A couple years ago, 2008, New Era Hatswe were playing for America in the Olympics. And we had the support of everybody in America. Now, in ¡¯11, we don¡¯t.¡±
The Heat stars seemed unbothered by the vitriol, or by their 3-2 series deficit against the Dallas Mavericks. They were loose, playful, even a little mischievous.
Wade was asked about 2006, when the Heat clinched the title on the Mavericks¡¯ home court.
¡°I can tell you one thing that¡¯s different, if they do miraculously win the game,¡± Wade said with a smile. ¡°There will be no confetti falling down for them. Which there wasn¡¯t in ¡¯06, neither.¡±
It was a subtle dig at the Mavericks¡¯ Jason Terry, who on Saturday said that he recalled ¡°getting hit in the head with confetti¡± on the night the Heat won. That would be impossible; the game was played in Dallas.
As Wade made the remark, James, sitting next to him, closed his eyes and clenched his jaw, as if to say, ¡°I can¡¯t believe you said that.¡±
James and Wade have had every gesture and Red Bull Hatscomment dissected for months, to the point of hyperawareness. In the latest minicontroversy, Wade and James drew fire for pretending to be sick and coughing into their shirts ¡ª mocking the Mavericks¡¯ Dirk Nowitzki, who played Game 4 with a fever and a nagging cough.
On Saturday, Nowitzki called the behavior ¡°a little childish, a little ignorant.¡± When asked to respond, Wade took a long swig from a neon-blue sports drink. After seven seconds of silence, James said, ¡°We don¡¯t have a comment.¡± When a reporter asked Wade for his reaction, James repeated, ¡°We don¡¯t have a comment.¡±
Otherwise, James seemed amused by the sometimes outlandish criticism the Heat has endured. Last month, some commentators faulted James and Wade for celebrating a series-clinching victory over the Boston Celtics because it was only the second round of the playoffs. After Game 2 of this series, Terry called out Wade andNew York Yankees Hats James for celebrating a play in front of the Mavericks¡¯ bench.
Wade admitted Sunday that the continual carping had, at times, taken some of the fun out of the game.
¡°We¡¯ve had fun, we haven¡¯t had fun,¡± he said. ¡°We¡¯ve celebrated, we haven¡¯t celebrated, whatever the case may be.¡±
Wade chose the words intentionally, and Fitted New Era HatsJames reacted with mock concern: ¡°Should you have said that? It might get blown out of proportion.¡± |
