A bitterly cold southerly is about to start its move up the country, which is expected to bring snow to sea level in some areas.

The lower South Island will be the first hit by the winter storm and it is forecast to reach the lower North Island by this afternoon, forecasters are predicting.

Freezing gales hitting exposed coastlines could create blizzard-like conditions and could reach record-breaking low temperatures, they say.

The big chill is expected to last for at least four days.

WeatherWatch.co.nz said a large low in the Tasman Sea last night crossed over into the Pacific Ocean a couple of hundred kilometres north of Cape Reinga.

This low will track southeast today and deepen and by Monday will play a significant role in helping pull up Antarctic air across New Zealand, working with three other low pressure centres in the western Pacific and a ``monster'' high in the Tasman Sea, WeatherWatch said.

While snow was likely in southern and eastern parts of the South Island today the worst of the weather would not be until Monday and Tuesday nationwide.

Snow was forecast to fall on the Waitakere Ranges in Auckland to at least 300m overnight Monday and into Tuesday.

WeatherWatch said their predicted high of 9degC in Auckland on Tuesday would be challenging the records -- Auckland's lowest maximum temperature is 8degC.

The number of towns and cities which may be affected by snow from the incoming blast could be a record, forecaster Philip Duncan said.

For her part, Porter spent two hours signing autographs, posing for pictures, blending ice cream and encouraging customers to buy a Blizzard. Balloons were sold for $1, with the proceeds also going to the charity.

The Pelham Dairy Queen¡¯s general manager, Amanda Everett, said the store appreciated Porter¡¯s help.

¡°It¡¯s awesome,¡± Everett said. ¡°We¡¯ve been excited about her coming. We¡¯ve been working hard to get donations.¡±
